dobyns crankbait rods.

Featured Replies

looking for a rod for fairly deep cranks. in the 6xd dd22 dt 16 range. considering the 735cb glass or the 765cb. dont have a dealer close by. anybody have experience with either of these 2 models?

I own the 765CB and I have always said that is the ultimate rod for the DT10, which I throw a lot. I don't throw the DT16 or 6XD much, but I would feel like that rod would be a little outpowered by those baits. I'd probably step up to the 806CB for those baits.

thanks. yes thats the opinion i got from most of the people on the dobyns group on facebook. im not sure i could get an 8 foot rod in my locker. ill have to measure and see.

You're either going to love the feel of a glass rod or absolutely hate it. The glass rod isn't going to be as sensitive. Strikes are sometimes hard to detect versus a graphite rod. Glass is also like driving a car with no shocks on a bumpy road. You'll feel every thump especially a chatterbait. On the flipside you'll land more fish with a glass rod. Glass is more spongy feeling and has more bend.  You can bomb a crankbait with them. Graphite has more feel. You can feel the crankbait off structure and rocks. The downside is you'll probably lose a few fish because they have more rigidity and some overcompensate on the hook set.

If your rod locker will accommodate an 8 foot rod I would strongly consider the 805CB be it the graphite or glass which is a composite blank. I have the 805 CB Glass but I’m also a fan of glass/composite rods. The 765 CB will also handle each of the lures you listed extremely well. The 735 CB was actually designed as a chatter bait rod.

thanks . i did some more research and saw where gary dobyns said he designed the 735 cb graphite for bigger cranks dd22 6xd etc. i thunk thats where im headed. i like the sensitivity of graphite because im cranking deep grass sometimes and need to know when i contact it etc.

I use the 735cb glass for what you are describing. 6XD pushing the limit.I picked up a Fred Roumbanis 803sb that is supposed to be the same blank as the 806cb developed for 10xd. Plan to use that for heavier deep cranks like the 8xd - 10xd.
