I got a line on a 20hp Chrysler - thing is it's a 17" shaft and my F-9 wants a 15" shaft.

Is that extra 2" too much, or will it work alright?

Don't Know ~

What I do know, is that you have put a ton of time & effort into this rig,

and done quite a bit of painstaking, super high quality work.

Perhaps consider getting exactly what the deal calls for.

You haven't settled anywhere else.

This might not be the item to start that on.

Ya, I know that for the most part, Andy

Thing is - 15-25hp short shaft motors in my budget are like unicorns around here. Can't tell you how many inquiries I've made about motors and found out that they were long shafts.

I hear ya ~

And I knew you knew that too.

You know how it goes, two days after you buy the long shaft,

a short shaft will fall right into your lap !

Good Luck Ken.

Too short will overheat the motor and can lose prop bite in rough water.  too long is O K under most conditions. Only exception is if you can get on a fast FULLY out of the water plane. Then some long shafts can do a sudden very sharp  U turn & possibly toss or bang up a person. a 20 hp motor to me would not normally do that in most boats.

What style and L x W  is the boat ? how big are you?

And we can put this to bed....just got a reply from the seller than someone who was coming to look at it today took it home.

Back to the search.

The Alumacraft F-9 is the father of the V-14 - 14'2" centerline length, 60" transom width, 64" beam

I'm 6'1", 195lbs.

That boat looks heavy. so I would not worry about doing 30 to 40 mph & doing a very sharp turn. My very light weight  16 ' x 4' Aluminum 15 transom &28 hp motor is carrying 16 gallons of fuel & a size 27 car battery & several anchors. swivel arm chair for fish fighting. I just gets on to a full plane . I am 200 #  I have done a sudden turn with no sudden hooking around of the boat.

Actually it's not that heavy - I calculated the total weight once everything is in and minus the outboard it comes to 653#. That's with 6 gallons fuel, 13 gallons in the livewell, all my gear, and me.

Capacity rating is 865#
