Help with boat running on plane

Featured Replies

I need to take my boat and have someone 1st) check it out (hull and motor) and 2nd) set it up to run faster. I went from running low 60's to low 40's. I have a Nitro z7 with a Mercury 150 Optimax Pro XS. Needs to be in the Middle TN area. I understand this will cost money to complete. Thanks in advance

What has changed?  Is your gas fresh?  Have you hit anything?  Do you have water in the bilge?  Have your rpms dropped?

I hit a log, turned it into my insurance but nobody can find anything wrong with the boat around my hometown. Only run 100% gas, use Mercury gas treatment #2 (have ever since I got the boat, 11+years), boat does not and has never taken on water, RPM's at 5300; after I hit the log I put a 8" jack plate on the boat. Motor is at 3" below bottom of boat (thats up 2.5", H2O is 12psi, and RPM's still at 5300 just like it was before jack plate. I need someone to inspect, check out and let me know what is wrong. Insurance will pay to fix but they need to know what is wrong.

Motor 3” below the bottom of the boat does not compute.  What is your ptp (prop to pad)?

When I got my boat the motor was too low.  I raised it up and got 10 more mph.  My ptp is 3 1/2 “.

Sorry, ptp 3"

I would try adjusting up and down to find the sweet spot. The higher I got mine the faster it would run but I had to quit because it was so high it wouldn’t go in the garage.

Center of prop shaft when parallel to plane surface should be 3 1/2”.

Any engine vibrations, a slight .001 bent prop shaft can lead to problems.

Did you change the prop to different type and pitch?

11 years is a lot of run hours, how many?

You have lots of racers in your area and very knowledgeable OB mechanics.

try taking everything out of the boat except batteries, TM, no water in the live well, and about 6 gallons of gasoline.

Lower the prop shaft height 1/2”.

Test run and report back.

Where did the log hit? Did you check for a spun hub on the prop?

hit the log on the bottom of the boat and then the motor. Had prop checked, no spun hub, had prop reworked. No change in boat lifting.

I have heard good things about Ship Shape Marine in Smyrna.    They’re not to far from you.  I can’t vouch for them personally.  They’ve posted a lot of videos on YouTube detailing their work.  Check them out.

With no other vibration or visible damage and the rpms, I’d still check the prop again. Boats don’t just suddenly lose speed from a bump without additional vibration or noise.

Thanks to all for your help. I'm taking the boat to C&O next week. The reason I chose them 1) there a Nitro dealer, 2) a Mercury dealer, and 3) they can handle the fiberglass if needed. I'll keep you abreast of what happens next. Tks again
