Understanding my Rod options

Featured Replies

So I am still pretty new to fishing really only two months been fishing maybe less than that. I have been doing a lot of research reading guides and watching videos. I managed to pick this rod and reel as they seemed not too expensive and able to work for all around fishing until I learn more.

After continued research and buying more tackle. I want to focus primarily around Frog fishing and texas rigging. I do not want to branch too far out right now as I dont have anything so its rather expensive. And I dont want to try a type of fishing that I cant really enjoy as for example I feel like crankbait may be better with a boat. But I am limited to bank fishing right now.

I am mainly trying to understand what type of rod is needed for frog fishing and if It can also do other topwater baits
What type of rod is needed for weighted and non weighted texas rig. Maybe jigs at some point

As a note I do know most people do braided line with frogs for dense grass. But I just dont have that option until I get a dedicated rod

My current gear -

Shimano Sellus Spinning Rod 7'1" Med Hvy

Pflueger President XT Spinning Reel PRESXTSP25X

Morning, a good place to start would be type in "frog fishing" in the search bar. You can do the same type of search for Texas Rig fishing also.                                                    You'll find a lot of good reading on both these things there. And, Good Luck!

Since you have a MH spinning rod I would say you could go 1 of 2 directions. The rod you have would probably make a good weighted t-rig rod. You could either go with a heavier casting rod with braid for your frogs and jigs or a lighter spinning rod for your lighter t-rigs and finesse baits. From there you can experiment with topwaters, spinnerbaits etc and see what works best with what you have.

Imo 12 lb FC on a spinning reel is a problem with line memory, line twist.

I am not a fan of braid with leaders but....your tackle and desire to frog fish shouts braid.

I suggest you use 30 lb braid direct to the frog.

Use your 12 lb FC as a 15’ long leader for everything else.

The rod is fine - that reel is a really a 1000 size. If you're going to be using heavier line, even braid, on that rig - go with at LEAST a 35 if not 40.

Also, Tom ( @WRB) is correct that heavier mono/FC on spinning reels isn't wise...30# braid, straight, on a Pflueger 35-40 size reel would be a much better choice.

Note - I don't skip with casting gear, my skipping rig is a Okuma Reflexions MH/F rod, Supreme 30, and 20# Sufix 832. I could use that rig for frogs in open to semi-open water....but not in thicker 'slop'.
