Put something together on this one today.

This is NOT the end all How to GoPro video.

It's how I do it and there are any number of other ways to make this happen.

Hope this helps @Junk Fisherman

Links to some of the gear I talk about in the video are below and also in the video description.

Very nice setup. ?

@A-Jay - you've given me some ideas for the camera setups on the F-9

Of course it'll be a budget setup...I don't have that kind of money....heck, that boom alone costs twice as much as my 3 cameras, 128gb memory cards and the external battery for the body cam combined.

Good and I purchased that boomstick a couple of years ago and I paid $99

Not sure what's going on with the price now, seem crazy high.

It's just an aluminum pole.

WTH.

Do you run above 1080p without the cams overheating?

Every time I do while using an external battery the cam shuts off after awhile due to heat, or sometimes the video is just corrupt. If I do 1080 it's no problem. I'm using a GP 6 and a 7 and they both do it. I've reformatted and done all the tricks. If I use an internal battery it's no problem.

According to GoPro, the shutting down is a feature to protect it. I think it gets hot due to the waterproofing.

Anyways I think I remember you having this problem a year or two ago so I'm wondering if you still do?

PS I have almost every catch I've made in the past 4 years on video, including PBs. I love 'em.

In the heat of the summer, and in northern Michigan that's a relative term, but the camera on the stern that is running mostly all my fishing day, WILL overheat if I run a battery in the camera.

When I take the battery out and use external power, regardless of other camera settings, it does not over heat.  The camera at the bow doesn't stay on long enough for over heating to be a problem.

When down in Mexico, the same deal worked to a point, but once it got over 100 degrees or so they both started cutting off intermittently.  At that point, we would just turn them on when we hooked up instead of running either on all the time.

I'm new here, reading a lot and think i actually have something to contribute on this one.  I had issues with my GoPro 10 overheating in hot weather while wading streams trout fishing (it's on a head/hat mount).  I tried a few things and settled on a simple 80mm USB powered fan from amazon, and I just rubberband it against the back of the camera.  It's powered from the same external battery pack as the camera.

I have not had an overheating issue since, even standing still in 90+ degree heat in full sun.  This is with hindsight active (so continuous loop recording) recording at 4k 60fps, horizon lock on, and max stabilization.

Fo fishing, if you load up the labs firmware, you can set hindsight to deactivate at whatever interval you want instead of the default 15 min of no camera interaction.  I found the default timeout immensely aggravating and now have it set to 24hrs.  The hindsight feature records either in 15s or 30s loop continuously when activated.  So when you hook a fish and hit the record button, the video will include the 15 or 30s prior, in my case usually getting the cast and hook set on the video.

Hope this is helpful

Joe

Timely video.  I'm looking at cameras right now.  I like to have pictures of the fish I catch but I've decided I waste too much time taking them.

Hi Joe and Welcome to Bass Resource ~

Thanks for the information.

I experimented with the 'looping feature' and found I preferred simply shooting it all

and editing later.

As for the overheating solution, glad that worked out for you.

Not sure I could pull that one off . . . .

I live in a warm climate so I'm sure that's most of the issue. A lot of people have the same issues I do with external batteries. When it's warm out they have problems, like you in Mexico. The outside of the camera near the lens gets up to 130-140 according to my temp gun even in room temperature. Hurts to touch it.

I bought a Panasonic Lumix for hiking and maybe fishing, at least on shore, partly for B-roll footage and also whenever I can get away with using it instead of the GoPro.

I like the 60x optical zoom and the bokeh effects. It looks great compared to the GoPro, waaay better, but I can't wear it on my head :) Well....I won't anyways!

As for the GoPro maybe I could throw a CPU heat sink on it. Hmm and the fan! Haha. That would look really slick :(
