Catching Shad

Featured Replies

You can catch them on hook and line and it's quite fun, size 22 hook, a small piece of wax paper, and a specialized bamboo rod I made with line running through the body out the tip, no reel. Will also catch minnows

Wonder if tying on a zebra midge or some other sinking fly fishing presentation with that size hook will haul them in?

Threadfin shad are phytoplankton ( plant) eaters, Gizzard shad are Zooplankton (animal) eaters.

Threadfin you need a long handle shad net early morning around boat docks is a good location.

I've thrown my 7' net from my kayak. A 4-5 foot net is much easier if you have big enough schools of shad or shallow enough water.
