New trolling motor length?

Featured Replies

I just bought a new (to me) 89 bass tracker tx-17 and it is my first bass boat. I tried to put in on the trailer with the trolling motor down and apparently that is not possible. Long story short I need a new trolling motor. Does anyone know what length I should get and while were at it what is the difference between the minn Kota edge and the v2?

Thanks for your help in advance!

ROFLMAO!!!

I'm sorry for your misfortune but that is the funniest thing I've read on this site in months.  When I was a newbie boater, I came very close to doing the same thing myself.  I feel your pain.

If it only bent the shaft, those are replaceable.  I've bent bunches of them.    If you also bent the prop shaft, then it's probably not worth repairing.

42" is the most common size for bow mounting on most bass boats.

That's an expensive mistake. If you're unsure of anything involved with your boat don't be afraid to ask. Since you're being forced to replace the motor, think I-Pilot. I think I paid around $1100 for a 70lb V2 w/ built in transducer. No tax No shipping from boatersworld.com

This may be a dumb question, but why would you stow the boat with the motor down? I would buy the same lenght shaft that you had before....but next time stow it in the up position, prior to putting the boat on the trailer.

Happy Fishing. ;)

I've never tried to load it on the trailer with the tm down.  But, I've had more than enough showers from forgetting to raise it when intending to move at high speed from one place to another.

Thankfully, the breakaway mount has prevented damage.

Probably the true story was he wanted a bigger TM but wasn't sure how to convence the wife of that, having just bought the boat.  Figured if he tore it off, then there would be no argument

I obviously know you need to pull the trolling motor up befor you trailer it but it was a pure bone head move. I did want a bigger thrust though so maybe I subconsciously ran the trolling motor into the trailer.

Since you mentioned wanting more thrust, if your original motor is a 12 volt you might want to consider stepping up to a 24 volt.  I have never heard anyone complain about having too much thrust and a 24 volt motor will give you plenty of thrust while being efficient.

Hmmmm.... You got me thinking... There's this new Z21 that I've been looking at... "I dunno honey, It just sank!"

Trailering a boat with the TM down?

Been there, done that.  10hp motor only lake.  I trolled up to the courtesy dock and tied off,  got the trailer and put it in the water, went back to the boat started the big motor to trailer it and forgot to pull up the TM.

Needless to say you're right,  you can't trailer a boat properly with the TM still deployed into the water...

;D
