Dobyns Champion extreme rods

Featured Replies

I'm not familiar with Dobyns rods. I mostly use loomis, exprides and megabass rods. From what I've read the dobyns power ratings on there rods are very under rated? I'm just trying to get an idea of the actions before I order one. I'm looking at a dobyns champion extreme 704 heavy and the 705 mag heavy. A mag heavy with a rating up to 1 1/2oz sounds like alot more rod then what im looking for but I heard it closer to a medium heavy and cant handle over an ounce. Is the 704 heavy similar to say a Medium Heavy expride? or a loomis e6x mag bass medium heavy?

I feel like a 7’6 MH expride fishes a half power heavier than a 734 champ.

Dobyns mag heavy is a heavy. Heavy is a medium heavy etc.... Compared to most rods I've fished. Awesome rods.

Thanks for the info Scott. IMO the Expride Medium Heavy is closer to a Heavy Action in most rods. So the Heavy Action champion extreme sounds more like a Medium Heavy+

Few years ago, I've bought 2 Dobyns Colt series, 703 and 704 a few months ago I bought a Kayden 714 and based on my experience with all three, the 4 power is really a medium heavy and 3 is more of

a medium IMO. The 714 "Fast Action" in fact is a little softer and slower action than my 7' MH Loomis GCX and I love using the 714 with 3/8 chatter bait Mini Max.

I'm almost certain that Dobyns Rods actions and tapers are all the same throughout their lineup but then again, I could be wrong.

To me Dobyns are somewhat unique actions. They all seem to have a light tip, but when you get to the backbone, it’s there and it’s real. I enjoy them a lot.

My only complaint is that their sensitivity is somewhat muted in the champion line up. I don’t feel that way about the Xtasay. Haven’t had the chance to fish an extreme yet.

My HP704C fished as a medium heavy fast.

You don’t need to guess, just call Gary Dobyns with your questions.
