This stuff is surprisingly thick. I have heard of throwing or casting a heavy rig high up into the air so it has enough force to punch through it, but haven't tried it here. This stuff is like tree bark, wood chips, twigs, and branches (mixed with actual mud and several inches thick in spots). The bass might be more likely to get a concussion than to be able to reach a bait scooting across this industrial sludge. I know there are times when fish will hang out under surface debris and I have caught bass and crappie in Texas fishing under the mats of surface debris after rain storms. Super User WRB Posted January 23, 2023 Super User Share Posted January 23, 2023 The bass in Castiac don’t know they should move up with the raising water level like bass do in most lakes. It’s been my experience at Castiac the bass stay suspended under shad schools in cleaner water. When the debris and silt starts to sink and decay the DO levels drop, not a good situation. Wind is your friend (#*&@*) clearing off the points and oxygenates the water column attracting shad and bass, target those areas in lieu of punching debris mats during early pre spawn. Summer mats are good but probably gone by that time. Tom

For me it was mostly a first of the year shake down trip and run some gas through the motor. I did wet a line but didn’t get bit on what I was throwing. *grass was very green and healthy looking. Caliyak
The rain keeps coming. At Lake Success, Cen Cal Elite Saturday event the biggest bag was 2.76 lbs. the high school event on Sunday, not much was caught but a young man caught a 2.1 for big bass. Each kid got a combo for their hard work in the rain. The lake is filling up fast.
Big Hands
Went down to the Castaic Lagoon late last night to dial in some of the baitcasters I have been servicing. Didn't expect to catch anything, and the evening went mostly according to the plan. The only thing that didn't go to with the plan was having my 15 lb mono main line break way too easily on a Carolina rig. I think maybe the glass bead shattered and cut the line. That's the only explanation I can think of as I don't usually encounter anything too sharp out in front of the 'casting pier'. In case anyone was wondering about the current water quality in the lagoon. . . .

Super User WRB Posted April 1, 2023 Super User Share Posted April 1, 2023 Looks ? MWD has contracts to purchase water even during wet cycles. MWD also inspect dams during droughts dropping the water 150’, then buying water to refill lakes they operate. Drunk on unlimited user $$. optimator
We’re looking great here in Southern Oregon too. A good wet snowpack that’s nearly 160% over normal. It should need a great fishing year.
