Frog Lures

Featured Replies

I was just wondering what is the best frog to throw into thick grass mats, Lily pads, and fallen down tree's with vegatation. There are so many frog lures i dont know what to get.

I suggest the Spro Bronzeye frog, if you choose another brand make sure its something with the 4/0 EWG gamakatsu hook.

In my opinion, if you haven't fished frogs before, then I would recommend starting out with plastic toads instead.  It's my favorite lure when bass are in the thick stuff.  I think they are more productive, easier to fish, with easier hookups than frogs.

Personally, I like the Zoom Horny Toad.   They come in a package of 5 for less than 1 Spro Bronzeye.   I T-rig them on a Gamakatsu EWG 5/0 worm hook (among others).   T-rigged on that hook they are very weedless, sink slowly, and can be buzzed thru the water.   They are much more productive lures for me than frogs.

they are completely different baits.

One has nothing to do with the other.  the toad is solid body, requires a hook to be inserted, and sinks.

the frog is hollow body, has twin hooks integral to the bait and floats.

The spro is great.  So is the R.I. swamp donkey.  but for my first frog the good ole scum frog will catch em.  they're cheap and readily available.

good luck and have fun.

avid.

Try the Spro.  I throw em all the time.  I like the Zoom Horny Toads too.  A great one-two punch.

the spro is a main stay in my box ....

I like a Spro Frog but it is hard to beat a Scum Frog for the price and I get just as many strikes.  I recommend a heavy rod or extra heavy, Braided line, and a side hook set.  The combination of these have really increased my hook up rate.

You miss the point.  What I'm getting at is that the frog's and toad's manner and method are pretty much the same.    I've found the toad more versatile, more weedless, and easier to get a hook-set with.  I rarely fish frogs anymore because the toad is so much more productive for me.

I like these, too.  They have good action when buzzing them through more open water, and they slip through heavy cover better than Yum's toad.

The spro's finish is painted on and they were recently discounted on the bass pro shop website, I wonder why...

The bodies vary in softness too, try to take them out of the package on the sly and squeeze them to find a soft one for easier hookups.

The sinking toads spiral down like a tube and often only sink a short way under the surface due to the line getting hung up on top of the grass or pads.  I like the Venom brand.

I use twist lock owner 4/O and 5/O hooks.  These are the best hooks for this application IMO.
