Ocean City # 143 From the attic Unused and almost 70 yrs later

Featured Replies

The other day I was rummaging through the attic of the lake house where I live. It's an old family home I moved into twenty years ago. I came across this Ocean City salt water reel #143 from 1956. That's the year indicated when I google it anyway. I was born in '55 so like me it's old. Knowing our fishing prowess in this family, my guess is that it was used maybe 1-5 times (probably the low end) as no one had many options to do any ocean fishing here even if we are in Maine. And I never heard of anyone going out more than a handful of times to do so. I'll be keeping it as it's 'in the family' but in my limited knowledge of anything but some lake bass and crappie fishing here on my lake I don't think I'll be using it anyplace, ever. Just thought it might be of interest. If anyone has any fishing hardware insight into this I'll be watching.

Thanks for posting Daniel, here's a list of Ocean City links on ORCA.

The company was eventually absorbed by Bronson, and then True Temper, though they kept the trade name around a long time.

Man. The box may be worth as much as the reel! That’s a great find.

Bonus points, Is Ocean City named after the town in MD or NJ?...

Good question. My old director (from PA) and I (from MD) used to mess with each other over which was the “real” OC. My guess would be MD, as I think the fishing is better there.

ha... found on the internet... Philly!

The Ocean City reel company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania opened its doors for business in 1922 and in 1934 bought out the Montague Rod & Reel Company.  Later acquisitions included the Edward vom Hofe Company in 1939.

Objection, non responsive....

Are there Lake Trout in the lake by your lake house?

Many years ago when I fished and hunted Quebec the locals used similar reels to troll "Christmas Trees" or "Cow Bells" for lake trout.
