Alabama rig help

Featured Replies

I’ve been having an issue with alabama rigs rotating/spinning while retrieving them. I’ve been fishing with the yum flash mob jr and 3 1/8 jigheads on the middle and bottom two arms with 2 dummy baits up top on owner cps springs. Mostly running 2.8-3.8 keitechs. Just wondering if this is due to weight distribution or retrieve speed, it seems to get worse the faster I reel.

Have you double checked all your swimmers are rigged straight? Including the dummies?

Rigged straight as in on the jighead? I usually try to rig them as straight as possible, and the dummies are usually just screwed on.

I’m just wondering if swapping out the bottom 2 jigheads for 1/4 instead of 1/8 or putting 1/8 jigheads on the dummies would reduce the spin?

Check the angle that the arms are splayed.  If they're not all balanced correctly, it can cause them to spin.

I throw a different rig but 3 1/8oz heads and 2 dummies. Head weight should not be a factor. Arm angles not being symmetrical can be a culprit. Dummies wound too tight or loose so that the cps is binding on an angle can be the problem. Non straight rigged swimmers can be a problem and if the swivel at the line tie is gunked up that can be a problem.

Also when wanting to work deeper/slower I’ve had the best luck just increasing the weight of the furthest back head not all of them.

On a 4 arm umbrella, to minimize spinning, think of having a "bottom" bait and a "top" bait, as opposed to 2 "lower" and 2 "upper" ones. The middle is always the middle... :)

Experiment with wire angles.

If it always spins in the same direction it's an alignment problem. Either the baits or the arms.
