frog help

I went out this morning and threw on a bronzeye frog (rainforest yellow)... I had like 30 hits on it this morning, including a 4+ pounder that exploded on it....I didnt hook any! I waited the 2 seconds to set the hook, and it just didnt work....What happend? do you think the frog was too big for there mouths?

what kind of set-up are you using?  I use a 6'6" MH rod and have my baitcaster spooled with braid.  When a fish hits it I immediately start reeling until I feel the fish then set the hook.  I use the Spro frogs and the Snagproofs.   Its unlikely that the frog is too big, esp. for a 4+lber.  I've caught them from 1lb up to 4lbs on the same frog you are using.

I think you are waiting too long to set the hook and/or you are probably not setting the hook hard enough.  With all topwater lures I set the hook once I can no longer see the bait, which is barely a second between the strike and realization the bait is gone.  With frogs you have to really slam the hook home, cause the hooks may snag the plastic body or have weeds/slop in the way of the hook point.

E2 x2.Once a bass gets a frog in its mouth it's hard to take it away from him. That's why so many people complain about losing a fish halfway to the boat they never had it hooked in the first place. One way to help this problem is to use megastrike or some other gel as a lubricant. This lets the frog slide in the basses mouth so the hook can penetrate. Also you can use a Mann's Phat Rat (or phat frog, however I've never used one)as the bass pretty much hook themselves. They use a completely different hooking system.Or best of all use a combination of the two.

Welcome to the world of frog fishing.

IMO, two things are a must for frog fishing.  A long, very stout rod.  I like a 7'6" flipping stick.  Braided line.  No stretch and it cuts through weeds better than anything.

When a bass takes your frog and turns, you not only have generate enough power to bury that hook into the fishes mouth, you also have to generate enough power to move the line through all the vegetation as well.  All that stuff lessens your hookset.  Thus, my opinion for the need of heavy tackle.

What Brad said ;)

I do not like long rods, because you've got more power with a short rod. Be that as it may, a long MH rod is an asset when frogging.

During the hookset, moving a lot of line quickly is even more important than power.

As for braided line (i.e. PowerPro), it's almost cheating.

I third the advice,

My frog rod a Loomis BCR875GLX that's 7'3" mag hvy power rod.

I use power pro 50 lb braid, no leader.

As much as you want to, you can't set the hook when the bass explodes on mr. froggie.

Wait till you feel the weight.  Don't worry he won't let go, at least not right away.  he wants that toad.........bad.

What I do is when the bass hits i drop my rod tip and point it right at the bait. The next couple of seconds will feel like an eternity but DO NOTHING> I don't reel NOTHING with the rod pointed right at the bait/bass you'll see the line straighten out, then the instant you feel the weight of the fish, HAMMER EM.

This works best..............but ya wanna know something?

I still miss alot.   it just comes with the territory dude.

but ya gotta love it right?

before you go chunking a spro you must have the gear to get them out .... ive been tweeking my gear and this is what works for me ..... i use a st croix legened tourney bass ( frog rod ) this rod is 7ft heavy fast action ..... i use a diawa zillion 7:1 baitcast reel ,,, loaded with 50lb power pro braid ....  and last i rely on a polamar knot tighted while wet ,, and tag end pulled with my needle nose to lock that knot down, after i pull that knot tight i cut my tag end .....

this is just what works for me ....  then you have to work on the hook set .... when you feel the bass slam that hook home ,,,, once hes hooked bring him straight in dont try playing him he will just burry up deeper and become more of a pain .... i use a heavy rod so i can yank that bass outta the salad ... i can also say the biggest bass i ever caught came on a spro .... so if you figure the bass is 5lbs plan on bringing another 5lbs of salad in with the fish .... you need heavy gear ...  ;)

thanks for all the help guys....so basically wait for the fish to take up all the slack?....I was also open water froggin, so there wernt TOO many explosions....most just came up and sucked it in....I was using a mh rod with a shimano citica 200d with 40 pound powerpro....so i guess i got the equiptment right somewhat.

Long Heavy or Extra Heavy Action Rod.  Heavy Braided Line.  A reel with a good tight drag. Always set the hook sideways.  I have had great success since I started using this set up.

im not sure how fast the citicas are ???? you want a burner reel ,,, you need to be able to pick up your line in a heart beat .....a slower reel will allow a bass to burry up deeper ....  in an open water sitch your rod and reel should be fine ,,,, however i wouldnt try fishing the slop with that set up ....  when i first started fishin frogs i started useing a horney toad ,,, this helped me understand the hook set ....  the fact that the toad is moving really let me feel the fish there .... in all honsty it sounds like the trouble you are having is in the hook sets .....  all you can do is keep fishing that frog till you hook a couple to get the feel ... the best way i can explane it is to see the bite pause just a hair and PULL THE TRIGGER ,,,, keep tryin youll get it .... ;) froggin is my favorite way to fish bass ....
