Dobyns vs falcon!?

Featured Replies

Looking at either the dobyns colt or falcon hd for chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, c-rigs.. Nothing over 1/2 oz

7’ M/H. Dobyns Heavy (4 power) is considered M/H by most people I know.

Take your pick - cork or EVA foam grip? Both are good choices in that price range.

Definitely think my Dobyns are better than my falcons at the same price point.

I think my Falcon is better than my Dobyns (Lowrider vs Fury) at the same price point. The cork is infinitely better. I like them both but I’d give the nod to Falcon in this price range. No experience with rods of either costing less.

Don’t have any experience with Dobyns rods but love my Falcon HD. For $79 I can’t imagine a better bang-for-the-buck rod, especially for moving baits. I have the Medium and it has a great tip for target casting and handles smaller chatterbaits and spinnerbaits well. Even can handle small jigs and t rigs. But not a good heavy cover rod. I fish weed lanes and pockets so I don’t get too bogged down in slop. Good topwater also. Pretty sure it’s a moderate fast action. Rated at 1/4 to 3/4 but you’re really pushing its limits at 3/4.

I've got a Dobyns Colt 734.  I like it and catch quite a few bass on it.   I've used it for stuff as small as a Ott's Garage 4 (1/4 ounce) and stuff as heavy as a 1/2 ounce bladed jig + trailer.

It's a little heavy, not action wise, but weight wise.  My 3 most used rods are it, a Lews MACH, and a Cashion Core.  It's heavier (weight wise) that either of those.  It's not a problem for me, it seems to be balanced well, just something to be aware of.

I had one Falcon rod. I don't remember the name.  I broke it via stupidity before I could decided if I liked it or not.  It wasn't the rods fault.  I don't know what their warranty is but I wasn't going to get them replace a rod due to my stupidity even if it was under warranty.

Both good rods. Both great service. I think Dobyns has the edge in service and balance. Can't really go wrong with either in any price range.
