jbmaine
Hi all, I usually don't do very well with Top water lures, but not for lack of trying. Over the years I've accumulated a decent assortment of top water kit and sometimes I'll even catch a fish on one. I'm not a bad fisherman. I'll hold my own with a paddletail swim bait or a Senko, ned rig , etc. But top water, not so much. It doesn't help when I read all the reports from members here saying how great there day was fishing top water , all the fish caught. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for you, I just wish it was my turn. Well today, it was. I don't know what happened or why ( I really don't care) but today it all came together. We hit one of our usual lakes this morning and found it to be overcast and dead calm. It screamed Top water, and today finally it happened. I was using a Whopper Plopper and from the first cast the bite was on. Large mouth, Small mouth, it didn't matter , I could do no wrong. For a few hours this morning the fishing was non stop. Every few minutes another fish. Finally the sun burned thru and the bite died but wow what a morning. If another morning like this is a long time coming it doesn't matter. This will tide me over for quite a while. Here's a few pics of the better fish. No monsters but all decent. thanks for looking Jim

Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted June 12, 2023 Global Moderator Share Posted June 12, 2023 Nice job, it appears the whopper plopper is the bait to have in Maine.

Super User Swamp Girl Posted June 12, 2023 Super User Share Posted June 12, 2023 Hey, JB, my fellow Mainer! Congrats on your fun topwater bite. In Maine last year, I caught four doubles, i.e. two fish on the same lure at the same time. You can see the loon-colored Whopper Plopper connecting the two bass below, a 19" LMB and a 17" LMB caught together. That's 36" on a single cast, about six and a half pounds of bass! Take that, you Lake Baccarac boys!
