(I was always told to keep things balanced - as a teen).    I was lubing and wiping it down.   I looked at the old reels braking.  I have two weights (?) out, two in.  Can I run just one out?  To get more distance?

Personally I would loosen the spool knob instead of using 1 brake.

You can use one brake and be fine. I run 1 shoe on when I’m bomb casting lipless cranks or football jigs. 90% of the time I run 2 on, 2 off, a little play in the spool and just use the outside dial when making adjustments

Depending on your casting skill and wind you can set it with zero brakes on. 1 brake isn't going to cause out of balance spool spinning, the bearings are too close tolerance.

@Darth-Baiter I’m sorry if I’m stepping on toes here but I figured since you’re talking Curado’s I bought a used 150 MGL which came with all shoes off and well that didn’t go well after I spooled it and casted a light weight floating Rapala ?. It has 6 shoe’s and I’m with you on balance so my question is 3 on and 3 off for balance or 2 on and 4 off or vice versa for a setup which will probably see 1/4-3/8 ounce lures? No more than 1/2 ounce. 

If using multiple brakes no harm in spacing them evenly but using an odd number or not perfectly balanced doesn’t hurt anything
