Hey yall! So we are in the fall transition here on the potomac river and I've noticed a ton of thick dying grass on all the parts I'm able to access as a bank/newbie kayak angler. The areas I fish are no more than 5 ft and can get to a foot. Inside the grass are a ton of baitfish. I've been having a tough time catching bass, I've heard that fish avoid dead grass but after a few outings I've notice fish hiding in the smelly dying grass still and I can't catch them. I've noticed this with the smallmouth I tried to fish for yesterday on the upper potomac, does anyone have any advice on what to throw or how to catch them? Thank you.

Throw something the size of the baitfish. Underspins with keitechs, straight boot tails on a swim jig head. Flukes work wonders this time of year as well. You have a lot of options but it can be tough competing against the smorgasbord that now has less hiding spaces as the grass dies off.

 

 

Beaver type bait on a flippin rig is #1 for me in that situation. Heard all my life that fish avoid dead grass. Figured out a couple years ago that's a load of bull. 

Pitch a jig and craw into that grass.

Weedless topwater is also a great option in shallow areas like that.

FYI: dead grass during winter holds heat
