Old Town Autopilot Question.

Featured Replies

I went with the smaller 10.6ft powered boat by Old Town, the 106 Sportsman and glad I did! It's similar to the Autopilot but without the spot lock feature. The motor is hand throttle controlled like a boat, which suits me just fine. I mainly fish solo and the 106 is a breeze to load/unload and I can launch it practically anywhere! It fits very well in my little Ford Ranger pickup. The motor in the 106 is nice and compact, same thrust at the AutoPilot. I get about 5mph wide open, not bad at all. It revs up and seems to plane out when nailed lol. I can take the boat in mere inches of water. The AutoPilot, on the other hand, the motor sticks down about twice the distance to accommodate the spot lock feature. This wouldn't work for me for shallow water fishing, places that are topped out with hydrilla or loaded with rocks, pennywort mats, heavy vegetation, which is about all I fish. I have no problem taking my 106 in the thickest cover imaginable. So it's mainly up to you and the intended usage of the craft which should determine what you ultimately get.

@jimanchower that looks really good.  Definitely more substantial than the mariner sails.  The curved top means you won't have to have the reels perfectly aligned to put them in place.  I see you have a round reel in there.  I don't think mine would take a round reel except for the outside slot.  I have to align all of the handles parallel to the rod to slot them all in (all low profiles).

1 warning before you have an oops moment.  Keep your feet on the pedals when you flip up the rudder.  The AP rudder tends to swing all the way to one side if you don't.  I don't think it would catch your rods as they sit there but it would be close it it turned hard right and then the rudder flipped over and nipped a tip.

The catch to this thread is that Jeffrey for whatever reason cannot stand and fish when on a bass boat or the shore...

"Can you stand and fish on this kayak while trolling?"

"I don't see why not."

"Great, because I can't stand and fish"

I don’t understand what you are saying or why you would post this.

It's a joke, take on an old joke. "I can stand and fish on the kayak while trolling? That's great, I haven't been able to stand and fish for years!"
