NRX+ 853C JWR or 843C MBR for a versatile bass rod

Featured Replies

Forgive me guys if this horse has been beat to death but what NRX+ bass rod would be comparable to a SC 71 MHF or MHXF?  I looked at G. Loomis' website and the 853CJWR or 843CMBR looked like one of those might work.  I'm looking a an "all around" bass rod.  TIA, Randy

What all are you looking to throw?

I have both. The 853C has a stiffer tip than the 843C. Both great rods but I the 843C is more versatile.  If you want something a fuzz heavier and longer,  take a look at the 873 CCR. Also, a very versatile rod.

@FishTankI like the 7'0"-7'1" because they fit in my Subie failrly easily.  Anything longer has to go in the front seat.

I have the 7'1'' MHXF Legend Elite as well. It is definitely stiffer overall and more powerful than the 853 and 843.

So @FishTank, what is a more versatile rod in your opinion the LE or the NRX+?

Could you give a general idea of what you want to throw and what weight ranges.

I throw a lot of bucktails and Rapala rattle traps, and some top water baits

Love, love, love my GLX 843c. My most versatile rod. I assume the NRX+ is similar. There's not a lot that I won't throw on it within its stated range (or a bit heavier), although if I were throwing 1/2+ ounce jigs with a strong weed guard I might want more power.

The MBR has a slower taper than the JWR's. It just depends on how heavy a bait you looking to fish.

If your thinking a 1/2 oz. the 844 is the better choice.

I have an 853 in NRX and 843 and 844 in GLX.  The MBR's are much better moving bait rods.

Out of the ones you mentioned, the 843C would be my choice but I am not a big fan of fast moving baits on this rod, like a lipless.  This is just a personal preference because of how sensitive the rod is and the fast taper. You would probably be fine with it.

I’m a newbie when it comes GLoomis rods. My question is what applications do you use NRX+ 843MBR rod for? Is it strictly for, say, topwater fishing and what do you folks mean by it being versatile? Apparently it’s not made for Texas rig/jig fishing which is done by JWR series, no? TIA

The MBR is a more moderate taper than the JWR and in general a more all purpose rod.

You can really do about anything from moving baits to jigs and plastics.

It depends on how heavy the baits that you want to fish, for 1/2 oz. jigs and T rigs with 1/4 oz and up I personally would move up a power to the 844.

I have both and if I can only take one it is always the 843C.  Mine usually has a 1/2 finesse jig(keitech/beast coast) on it but can and will throw Texas rigs, chatterbaits, spoons, cranks, underspins etc on it.  It may not be "made" for jig/Texas rig fishing but it definitely does it well and that blank sure is sensitive on jig bites it is electric to me the way that bite transmits on it.  My 853C is used as strictly a TX rig rod on days I actually carry both models.
