Super User Long Mike Posted December 8, 2006 Super User Posted December 8, 2006 Has anyone had any bad experiences when dealing with St. Croix? After looking at the reviews of the rods on the BPS site, it would appear that St. Criox allows zero flexibily on their warranty. Since its easy for a few disgruntled customers to sway the overall rating of a BPS product, I thought I would throw it out to the 7000 members (and still growing) for their opinions. Quote
justfishin Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 As ReelMech said in an earlier post, a good rod is one that has a warr. that the builder or company will back up. I am spending the winter in the learning process of building my own rods. If you want a off the rack rod or semi custom rod check into Gator Rods and All Star. Gator is a smaller company that has a one year warr. on their rods but, I have had them for a lot longer than that and broke them or busted up and eye or so, and the owner took good care of me. I have had the same experiance with All Star rods. I do know the rep here but, I have never been questioned by them and the return and price of a fix and a couple of new rods for replacements were easy. Quote
Guest avid Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 Anyone dissing the St. Croix warranty service is a shill for another rod company. They are quite simply the best. Example #1. I had a guide break when my braid wrapped around it and I got a hang up. I called ST.Croix customer service. Rather than have me ship the rod to them with the $20.00 bench fee. They mailed me the correct replacement guide and I had it expertly repaired by my local rod guy for about 5 bucks. there was no charge at all from St. Croix. Example #2. My tournament bass casting rod - I broke the reel seat by overtightning the seating screw (used pliers for that extra turn......pop) I called St. Croix, told them exactly what happened. They told me to ship them the rod with the $20 bench fee. Two weeks later they sent back a brand new rod. Does it get any better than that? I don't think so. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 I've delt with their warranty when I worked retail. They stand behind thier product 100%. But if its a rod locker smashed rod or something else that the consumer did, its not always a warranty issue. Which really IMO isnt their problem anyway. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 8, 2006 Super User Posted December 8, 2006 avid had a post yesterday briefly explaining the legal reasoning for wording of the St. Croix warranty. I don't know why they don't just copy the G.Loomis Xpeditor program. In practice, St. Croix stands behind their rods 100%, or at least that has been my experience. A few years ago I slipped while bank fishing and broke my Avid AC66MF. At that time BPS exchanged the rod for me over the counter. Now the procedure has changed and you have to send the rod in, but I think the replacement policy is still in place. Quote
castaway Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 I can tell you of one time their lifetime warranty wasn't worth the paper it was written on.I bought a Avid 7'3" MH AC73MHF Flipping stick, used it a couple of times and then while fishing it, I noticed the first guide nearest the handle, the epoxy was pulling. When I got home and as was calling Saint Croix about the rod, I noticed the pulled guide was resting on the telescopic butt section. The other flipping sticks I have owned never allowed the guide to hit when collapsed.I got this guy on the phone and I explained to him about the design and what I thought had happened, I must have hit the guide when collapsing it when it was extended, pulling the epoxy. The guy told me I must have forced the rod retracted excessively causing the damage, therefore the warranty will be voided from misuse. I swore at him as he hung up on me, took it to a local rod builder, he looked at the problem, told me the guide wasn't damaged, he could re wrap it but it looked fine with the exception of the epoxy discoloration where it started to pull. He told me to stop by a Walmart buy the $2.00 fuiji keeper so the guide can't be hit by the butt section blank. I did what he said and I still use the rod today. Saint Croix no longer has this rod in their Avid series line up, but if they did I most likely would buy another one having the Fuiji keeper waiting to put on it upon its arrival. They do make a nice rod though, I wish I would have written the jerks name down who I talked to.If I have another problem with anything, I am going to make a point to ask names and write it down from now on, probably won't need to worry about it, but that made me angry, that was why I bought the Avid series rod, because of the lifetime warranty, little did I know I didn't really need it , even when I thought I might have ;DIvan.
