dv616
So, I saw some videos on the snootie jig and I added it to my pile of molds. I see some people added a wire bait keeper. With the design, adding a skirt would mean there is no room for the ball to act as a keeper. I see some people added a wire keeper. That looks tricky with how thin the lead is there. How hard is that to do? Was the snootie designed to not be used with a skirt? Do you guys use it mainly without a skirt? I plan on it being a swim jig for me (I ordered the mold that goes up to 1/4 oz). Let me know your tips and tricks for this one! Thanks! cadman
I will start by saying I am a die hard Snootie jig user. I tie silicone and round rubber skirts on that jig with no problem. I also use trailers on all my jigs. Yes the trailers sometimes do slip down the hook shank due to the lack of a wire bait keeper. I am in the process of putting in a wire bait keeper in the mold by carving it out. I will see how it goes. I use this jig as a swimbait and for hopping/dragging it on the bottom. Other than I like the smaller sizes of the Snootie, I think the Do-It Manic mullet would be a better choice. However this mold doesn't have an 1/8 oz size, but it has a ribbed collar that may hold plastics better. I will check tonight to see if I can put in a wire keeper in the Snootie mold. Will let you know.
Super User WRB Posted March 12 Super User Share Posted March 12 2 easy methods to add a soft plastic trail keeper to jigs without weed guards or barbed keepers 1. Use a medium size Hitchhiker spring super glued against the skirt end of the jig. 2. Before installing the skirt use 20# mono line and spiral wrap the hook shank about 1/2” next the skirt end of the jig. Double hitch knot both ends of the spiral line wrap and cut ends off with about 1/8” tags ends. Super Glue the knots and spiral wrap line. This creates 2 barbs (glue coved tag ends) and the spiral wrap to secure the soft plastic when ever you want to add a trailer. Works good! dv616
I had been looking at the Manic Mullet. I also wanted as light of a jig head as I could get with the 1/8th oz (I would have also liked a 1/16th if possible). I tend to be a fan of the ribbed plastic keepers since I pour my own. If I did not make my own plastics and still used Zman, than the wire style all the way. Good idea on making one with mono. I was trying to think of a way to use stiff flouro pieces and wrap with thread in a way that made “barbs” out of the flouro to act as a keeper. You can always use something like a skirt collar or plastic earing back to hold the trailer on. Allen

Slip the skirt on the collar, if you’re using a swim bait as a trailer, nose hook it. Same with a crawdad bait, but once thru the tail.
