Yamamoto Hula Grubs and Kreatures

Featured Replies

how do you guys fish them? i tried a hula grub this weekend in some sand flats, rigged with a jig head and a smaller bas (about a pound) almost swallowed the thing then broke the top of the water and i used a texas rig and all that bit was a little perch... but he wasnt big enough to swallow the whole thing. i just went and bought some kreatures, so some help would be greatly appreciated!  :P

A hula grub rigged weedless on a Dave's rock hopper 1/4oz jighead is deadly on Spotted bass and big smallmouth. I don't use them very much for LM's though, just never had much luck with em.

I haven't really used the Kreature that much, nor have I caught many fish on it, but it seems like a good bait and one of the local tournament anglers swears by em. He rigs them backwards with a 3/0 superline hook and an 1/8oz weight and tears up the Chickahominy river bass on em.

How do you fish it?  Slow, fast?? details would be great.

Thanks

Matt

I use the  4" Hula grubs Weedless Texas 2/0 EWG..

W/ a 1/8 bullet sinker and slow jerk um across the bottom

and they work wonders on LM..

I won a local tournament about 2 weeks ago using the kreature rig backwards with a #4 EWG hook weightless.  Toss around weed line and let fall on a semi slack line.  Early in the year I used the hula grub on a spot remover head around laydown and also around grass lines.  It also can be fished on drop off just like a jig

I like the 5" Hula Grub, T-rigged, fished just like a T-rigged worm, in all the same situations. I get this out when my regular T-rig baits, 10" Power worms, Big Kahuna Cut-tail worms and big Power Hawgs, aren't getting the job done and I want to down-size my offering. My normal T-rig is a 5/0 Gammy EWH hook and Ultra Steel weight and clicker. Weights vary from 1/16oz to 1/4oz. The only change is the hook. I'll go down to a 2/0 G-Lock hook for the Hula grub.

I almost always have a jighead on my one spinning rod with either a Zoom Trick worm or a 7" Power worm. If those aren't doing it, I'll put a 4" hula grub on the same jighead. The Ike's Spike from Tru-Tungsten is becoming my favorite jighead, despite the stupid price. With this jig, the grub is as weedless and snag proof as a T-rigged bait, and can fished anywhere you want to throw it.

I haven't fished the Kreature enough to comment on it. Yet.

Cheers,

GK

I love the yammies on a 1/4 oz owner standup jig head, but I had to buy a mold to make the weedless ones that I really like.  Paint, glitter and all the crud that goes with it, but I got the product that I want soo.......

I have had a great year with using both the Hula Grub and the Kreature.  I rig the Hula Grub with a 1/4oz Ike Spike or a plain ball head jib. The Kreature I T-rig with a 1/8 oz or 3/16oz bullet weight.  I fish Hula Grub just as would any jig and the Kreature slow with a little jerk, sort of the same way I fish a lizard.

The colors I have had the best luck with are Black with Blue Flake and Pumkin with Black Flakes.

Most of the time I fish it slow and crawl or slowly hop it along the bottom, but sometimes they will really crush it when you pop it off the bottom really quick (but that is really a hit or miss technique, they're either on it or they're not) And when I fish the rivers I just crawl it and let the current drift it around. Most of the time you won't feel the strike, either your line will start moving, it will just get heavy, or you will just pick it up and it will feel like your bait has "disappeared". I hope that all makes sense.
