Finally did it. Point Blank 701mlf review!

Featured Replies

I finally pulled the trigger on a point blank about a month ago.  I've fished it a couple times now.  My build is a 7' mlf set up as a spinning rod.  Split grip carbon fiber with an amtak comfort swell seat with uni-lock hood.  Rod built is about 3.5 ounces built.  I paired it with a Garcia Zenon mgx that weights 5.5 ounces.  So super light combo.  I used it for jigging 1/4 to 1/2 ounce, casting a small split shot with shiner minnow for bass, and tossing small jerkbaits.  This rod is absolutely amazing.  I've used nothing else like it.  A couple times I thought I had a bite and it was just my 3" shiner minnow wagging his tail....this is in fairly heavy current.  Spot lock held on speed 3 on the 24v terrrova.  Mick D suggested this blank numerous times.  We have used a number of "good" blanks from NFC, St. Croix, Batson, MHX pro.  Honestly, they just don't compare.   At this point I plan on doing a few more and selling some of my other rods.  The way this thing casts is incredible.  I thought maybe it was this overpriced reel but it's not. (the zenon is nice, but not worth the $$$ IMO)  So now I have to build a 6'6 light and I'd like the 6'9mlxf and then a 7' medium.

Point Blank has CCS numbers published on all their blanks, so be sure to check them out to get a good idea of the power and action of their blanks.

They are indeed just... better than.

While I admit I'm not the most experienced, (haven't used Loomis, and limited St Croix) the 7'3" MHXF is the best 3/8oz jig rod I have ever used.

Do you think that rod would be good for a senko/ Neko rigs? Looking at having someone build me one?  What guides did you use? Have you used an NRX+?

That rod is my fav, will work for just about anything, including senko/Neko.  I prefer Fuji KLH reduction guides with two KB4's then KT4's to the end.  Titanium tiptop.  You can go a little bigger on running guides if you want and still have a great rod.

KLH 20-10-5,5M reduction or KLH16-8-5.5M depending on planned line use.  See the KR software at AnglersResource.net for guidance.  I usually use the former reduction lineup go give a little flexibility in line use.

Just noticed this post.  Since its ERN is a little over 19 it handles 1/2 well. I don't think I've gone as light as 1/16, but it handles 1/10 with a ned well.  Many would call this blank a medium power. For example, the St Croix SCV70MF has an ERN of about 17 and is called medium power.  Both are very good tube rods.   Have caught a lot of very nice smallmouth bass on them.

I was told that Point Blank rods will be completely redesigned and updated.  All models will be dramatically stronger and all but two are lighter than previous models.  They have also added UL and L versions to all lengths.

Expect to see them at ICAST 2025

If you like the current versions, a couple of suppliers have existing stock closeout priced at $100 per blank with limited inventory.

What does "stronger" mean.  Less sensitive to damage?  Or more power?  Or ??

Told by whom?

Hard to believe a 7 foot 20 ERN blank can get much lighter than 1.7 oz .  (701MLF) I think that's what its specs are.

UL's should be good BFS candidates.

Sorry to resurrect and old topic but I just purchased this blank for my first build and was wondering how many guides you used?

I don't think you can beat the Fuji KLH guides.  For most lines KLH 16-KLH8-KL5.5M- a couple KB's of the runner size you want, and then 4 KR's will work, but for versatility I go KLH 20-KLH10-KL5.5M, 2 KB size 4, then 4 KR size 4 + the Arowana tiptop.  You can go bigger than 4's if you prefer and it still will perform well.  The Fuji KR software places the reduction guides perfectly, and the two line static load test places the other guides.  The two line test is better than one, easier to use, since the guides do not take the loading of the blank and don't come off.  They also may be moved around without unloading the blank.  AnglersResource.net  Message me if you have further questions.  I now have two of these rigged up all the time.

what is the two line test?

It is using two lines on the blank to load the blank instead of one.  You tie one to the tiptop and load the rod.  The other goes through the guides and has a light weight on the end of it just to keep the line taut.  You use the line through the guides to evaluate how the guides are located.  It is actually easier to use than a one line test.   More info at Anglersresource.net, click on menu, then go down to the listing of resources which includes the very good KR software for selecting and locating the reduction KLH guides.   I don't even test cast any more, just use the software + the two line test for spin.
