I want to throw some black plastics, but I'm looking to be versatile in my purchases.

 

Could I Sharpie a lighter swimbait or fluke black and have it last long enough to be effective?

In my mind the fish would taste it if you used that much, but I don't really know. 

I've used a black sharpie on a chartreuse tail on a black lizard. It doesn't cover all the color but did make it look more "even" with the body. I caught a bass the next day so I guess my fish didn't mind the scent (if there was any left). 

 

 Give it a shot. Do it a day or so before fishing and let it air out.

I use sharpies a ton and the bass love em but I will say that the black marker ink won't penetrate the soft plastic as well on some colors....don't know why.

 

I like the black dip n dye for when I really wanna go with a bold and dark new look on a soft plastic.  JJ's or Spike It will work fine.

 

The black marker I use more for little tips on jig trailers or maybe a black back on a crankbait that's too light on the back.

The spike it pens work and add scent to the plastics, but I don’t think they are available in black. The spike it that you dip the bait I. Works even better. I believe spike it uses acetone or something similar as the solvent, whereas a sharpie is alcohol based. Give the sharpie a try and see. 

Sharpie pens are better for high lites in leu of solid black backs imo. Barlows sell s paint for soft plastics works good.

i would’t over think darker black.
