Hello, I just purchased a Shimano Metanium 100 (23) 101XG from Digitaka and wanted to swap out the spool for the US Version. What are some recommended sites to purchase the OEM spool from? I tried looking up this reel on the Shimano website but the only 101xg I could find claims that the spool is discontinued and no longer for sale. 

From my understanding, Shimano is in the process of revamping part numbers, which is why even newer production models are showing as out of production.  You may need to do it the old fashioned way and call them.

When I place orders with Plat.jp, throwing in  repair parts is easy and becomes cheap with the existing order (+shipping).  I'm sure using their repair parts links, Plat will get the p/n change straight, because they're in constant communication with Shimano and Daiwa.  

They will also post by airmail now, which saves some $

Out of curiosity, what's better about the USDM spool?

Typically the JDM Metanium will have a slightly smaller spool and smaller knobs. I like the USDM spool because it will hold a little more line and it performs a little better with heavier lures. However, the more that I look into this specific Metanium 23. I can't find a difference so maybe they changed it for this specific version.

I usually go to Shimanos website and pull the parts list and schematics. If they don’t have the part in stock I’ll just start googling the part numbers. I’ve never had many issues not being able to order directly from them though unless it was a very old model. 
 

Asian portal fishing was good for me.

Directly from Shimano US, if they don't have it and I need the part pretty bad then I buy them from ereplacementparts.com, they are Shimano authorized parts dealer.

 

20 USDM Metanium Spool assembly should fit and it's in stock the last time I looked (8/6/24).

Depending on the reasons as to why you want to replace a JDM 100 spool, going from JDM 100 to USDM 150 spool size might not be worth it, JDM 70 to USDM 150 might be, but it's all up to you.

Yeah, as I was doing more digging into the specs of the Metanium 23 I agree with you. I don't think it's worth the swap. I don't think Shimano US even sells the Metanium 23 or at least I don't see it as an option. It's only on Shimano Japan that it's available.

USDM:

20 Metanium 150 (all 3 Gear ratio)

24 Metanium 70 DC (HG & XG only)

 

JDM:

20 Metanium 70 (all 3 Gear ratio)

22 Metanium Shallow Edition (all 3 Gear ratio)

23 Metanium 100 (HG & XG only)

24 Metanium 70 DC (all 3 Gear ratio)

 

USDM & JDM 24 Metanium DC 70A, 22 Bantam 150A, 18 Bantam MGL, Aldebaran BFS and a few more are pretty much identical.

 

Sorry, it's so confusing with all these dang reels sometimes that I have to write them down to get a good night sleep!😵‍💫

I just got in yet another Met 23’ from Digitaka.  If memory serves me correct, the spool capacities are identical between the JDM Met 23’ and USDM 150B.
