Thinking of upgrading my kayak

yeah, the new one is just an ipilot link terrova with a cut down shaft.  It makes sense to have it and that will do a lot of the things that people have asked of the autopilot. It’s the 55# thrust plus link.

i don’t see this as a good pair with the epdl.  The extra $1500 adds weight and only gives spotlock/navigate.  If you’re buying new, then you get the regular pdl and add the terrova.  There isn’t a standard paddle pro which would be an even better choice to minimize cost and get spotlock. But if the aftermarket mounting plate works then a 120 paddle is $1k and the terrova is $1500. That’s spotlock and then some for $2500, and around $3k once you add battery and box, mount, etc. That would be seriously tempting.

Take a look at the Wilderness Systems Tactical Pro.

If I sell me Autopilot, I think that’s what I would buy. But Old Town just crashed the resale value of my kayak.

its a neat boat. Though at that price I bet some would prefer a 120 pdl as the base so you have two propulsions. The inbuilt storage of the tactical is neat, though the whole thing is verging on being a plastic boat and not a kayak (fine line, I know). Alas, my autopilot has been gone for two weeks now so I’m no longer in the kayak game.

Want to bring this back up as I had an additional thought:

what got me thinking about wanting to upgrade was I was fishing under a bridge, pretty decent current and a pretty decent wind. My anchor would not hold. Perhaps it was just not able to hold. I was using the anchor wizard anchor. So that got me to thinking if it was the design of the anchor. Would a fluke style (tight line anchor) have held better?

A fluke style anchor is all I use in current.

I assume you have a section of anchor chain and a long rope?  I think the recommended ratio is 7:1 rope length to depth of water.

I haven’t used an anchor since I got pedals but I used to use a 5lb mushroom anchor and had minimal issues. If there’s dirt to collect on the anchor, it’s not going anywhere but even on rock it holds pretty good.

if that isn’t enough you can try a 8lb mushroom anchor. If that doesn’t hold the spot probably isn’t safe to anchor in.
