Does braided really spook fish?

Featured Replies

In my personal experience I have found I catch slightly more fish and fish quality increased 20%ish using straight fluorocarbon. Granted a lot of lakes I fish are very clear to gin clear water 15’+ vis.
I will say with 100% certainty I catch more fish on a wacky rig using straight flouro instead of braid.
does braid “spook” the fish idk. Can it make them second guess? I think so.
Stained lakes I’ve experienced no difference between braid vs flouro. 5’vis or less

This topic has discussed quite a bit over the years and I am still not 100% dead certain on my thoughts.

I have been in some conditions were it didn't matter the line or the bait, the fish were just biting whatever.  Then there are days where line choice was everything but I don't think bass seeing braid makes a difference in the number of bites. I think they tend to feel it more than anything else.

I find in dirty water, where its more reaction based, it doesn't seem to matter.  Everything else is chosen on a technique basis.  Jerk baits get fluoro, frogs get heavy braid, squarebills get fluoro due to jagged rocks etc...

When I started bass fishing in the mid 50’s  we used straight Dacron braid tied onto lures and caught lots of bass. In the 60’s mono line came out along with free spool spool Ambassador reels, all we used was mono line for 30 years. FC and super braids came out in the 90’s, now we had 3 line choices continued to this day.

What it comes down to is personal preference that you have confidence using, the bass don’t seem to care!

I feel that if the lake has a lot of fishing pressure, then Yes. Because the fish have seen it all and are more wary.  A clear line like FC would probably be better.

My home lake has alot of pressure and I feel like I can catch more on FC or mono Vs braid.

How long of a leader do you run?

I think my catch rates increased when I switched to braid for wacky because I could see the line a lot better and react quicker. I usually run at least 6ft for leader.

I think hi vis with a short leader might have an affect with finesse lures but probably negligible on reaction baits.

Why use braid without a fluoro leader, though? Unless i am frogging or fishing in the salad, i always have a fluoro leader so braid or not, it doesn't make a difference.

I have switched to Sufix 832 Camo for everything. Their 20 lb braid is 6 lb diameter - almost thread like. If a couple of treble hooks banging around don't spook the fish, I don't think  braid will either. If it does, I believe it is offset by the increased sensitivity and bite detection plus I rarely break off.

I know little for about what bass see, nor how they interpret when they see fishing lines.  What seems crazy to me is the idea that bass don't see fluoro.
