Favorite jig rod

Featured Replies

I'm considering a high end jig specific rod. The g Loomis is expensive and some say it's overated for the price but I  have no experience. Would an ex pride but a good high end option or does anyone else have a rod they like better? Looking for recommendations for a jig rod 1/4-1/2 oz.

Yeah would rather not spend nrx money if I don't have to.

Depends.. GLX 844c MBR or GLX895 F&P

But yet you want a high end rod.  High end and cheap do not go together.  Exprides are nice, but not high end.

Interested in a rod that fishes exactly like the 893c nrx+?  Buy that Talon I just linked for $150.

This is what I'm rocking this year.  It is a very nice and very light stick.

But, it is hard to beat the nrx+ 873c or 893c.

Not a bad price, what guides are on it? I know they are Fuji I’m gonna assume aluminum oxide, btw, nothing at all wrong with those guides beside weight but they definitely hold up.

Today look at Okuma X series 7’3” MHXF casting rod.

I have my fav, but take a hard look at Dobyns DX744sh ( something like that).  It’s a great rod.

my fave is the Xbites.

These would be what I was looking for if I wanted high end performance but not the NRX price tag.

Dobyns Xtreme

Shimano Poison Adrena

Megabass Orochi

Ah the poison adrena I forgot about that one

  • Super User

I've done really well with a few.

Dobyns Sierra 7'6 heavy flip

Favorite Emperor 7'3 MHF

Abu Garcia Veritas 7'6 MHMF

Irod Gen3 Sniper Swim (excellent jig and t rig rod)

I'm probably going to get a dedicated jig rod from irod next and it will probably be a gen 3 in the 7'3-7'5 range and probably be a MHF ish action.

How heavy of cover what what type of line?  The falcon Cara Amistad is a great rod in that range.  A 1/4oz jig plus a decent plastic like a rage bug will be enough for pitching; heavier is no problem.  Mine is spooled with 20 lb mono for use around heavier vegetation and wood.  Great rod.  If you're talking more about dragging a jig (rock and brush piles) rather than pitching then look no further than the Cara heavy cover jig.  Either rod is in the $250 range and fishes like rods much more expensive.

The Okuma rod referenced is what I would buy today if looking for a new jig rod for Horizontal Jigging*. Toray X wrapped light weight rod blank with state of the art guide train and reel seat equal to rods 2X price point.

Titanium K frame with SiC inserts.  It really is an incredible rod at $150 on sale. I cannot stress enough how good these rods are for the money.

Then its the HCJ.  It's rated 1/2-1, but you could just as easily say 3/8-1 total bait.  I've fished it with a 1/8 oz swim jig and 3.8 keitech which is around 5/16 I think.  My more normal size on it is 3/8 or 1/2 plus plastic.  Great rod and this is what it was designed to do.

Are you sure about that?  I don't see it listed anywhere on their website and that's definitely a selling point.  I'd be surprised if they were using SiC/Ti and not screaming about it.  That's about $75 (retail) worth of guides.

I sent them a message a couple hours ago, still waiting on an answer

You are getting awesome components and a fantastic blank for the money.  Brad Loomis (Gary's son) makes these blanks.

BUT.....I am not going to lie...expect a little bit of fit and finish stuff.  For example, one of my two 7' rods has the very first guide and the hook keeper slightly tilted to the right and not inline with the other guides.  Annoying as I am OCD and like my stuff perfect, but it does not affect performance.  My 7'5" has a little bit of sloppy epoxy on the very front of the reel seat.  Again, annoying to look at, but does not affect performance.  If you can get past those little things, you are getting absolutely one hell of a rod for CHEAP.  For me, that is extremely minor stuff considering the blank quality and the componentry you are getting for the price.  They did have about six or seven models to choose from.  All that is left now is the 7' and 7'5" casting models. Website is showing 7' has only 5 units left.

I just called Oscar to get the answer for @F14A-B.  I know him personally.  He said SiC/Ti.  Straight from the horse's mouth.  Oscar built the rods fyi.

Shipping is $25

Would a picture of mine help identify them?  I would not know what they are made of looking at them personally.  But I do trust the guy that built them to tell me the truth.  The 7' rod is crazy light weight.

Personally, I’m a big fan of alconite so it’s fine by me. K series Fuji? They rock and if I got ti-sic then woo hoo!!
