Best Time of Year to Purchase Fishing Gear

Featured Replies

Are there any times of the year when there are big sales on fishing gear? I've seen a few sales going on, but do they get better as fishing season approaches?

Most of the independent shops have left my area, so I've been looking primarily at Cabelas & BPS.

My goal is to find an inexpensive, but decent, rod/reel combo. So, should I buy something now, or wait for better sales.

Thanks! ;)

This last Fall, my local Cabelas had a sale which was 25% off all rod and reels (excluding Shimano Products).  I pick up a G. Loomis IMX 7' MH Power for $183.75 (retail $245).  I don't know if that have that same sale every fall, but I will be saving up and waiting for that sale.

Thanks for the input!  I'd seen the  sales at Cabela's and BPS and was wondering if I should jump on the specials.  I think I saw that the BPS Spring Forward sales is good for another 2-3 weeks.  Guess that gives me at least a little more time.

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...it's all good.   ;)

Seriously, most stores usually have their clearance sales in late winter (which is to say NOW).

BPS is having a killer sale on their Extreme combos.  $70 if memory serves.  I played with a few of the combos last weekend and liked them.  The rods are usually $100, reels $60.

One of the better times would for towards the end of the year as alot of stores are having a inventory clearance around that time.  Another good time would be right before spring.  Both BPS and Cabelas have spring sales to bring in the new season.

Right NOW is the BEST a few more weeks here in maryland they will have all new stuff out no more clearance GET TO um ASAP, walmart,k mart, dicks,BPS,Cabelas.Anytime after x mas is good actully for about a month and a half .The past month i have spent about 250 300 bucks on clearance stuff mostly lures, line, couple rods and reels and if i had bought it REG price im sure it would be 800 easy.My best deal so far was 6 mepps killer kits for 1 cent each at k mart, they were on clearance the sticker said 8 bucks i was just gettin 2 she rang um up it said 1 cent i said are u sure she said yup i ran back got the rest.So best thing to do is even if it is marked down check the price before u buy u might be able to go take um all.Matter of fact i was at walmart tonite they had Gamakatsu hooks marked 1.25 so i went and scanned myself 50 cents hmm mmm i bought um all ;)

I got 36 FLW jigs and 12 packs FLW 6 inch worms for .25 ea last Monday.

For me the best time to buy fishing gear is usually between Jan 1 until Dec. 31 ;D ;D

This is the best time of the year to find deals on used equipment.  Lots of sponsored tourney guys get new equipment and purge last years stuff.  Great bargains on year old rods and reels.

It does not matter when the best time to buy fishing equipment is, when the bait monkey sinks his teeth into your butt cheek you are going to buy a item anyway, lol. ;) ;)

Days that end in a Y usually work best for me. ;)

  • 10 years later...

Last year I got one of last years models of Chronarchs before they came out with the new model for for $199 normally $279.99 at Bass Pro the day after Christmas.  But you gotta make sure you get there early cause Usually there's only a few and they go fast on any good deals on a Shimano Reel.

:D  I got a chuckle, too.  But to add my .02c worth for any newbie looking...closeouts can be great.  $200 reel for $98, $300 rod for $75.  Some sales can be great.  $225 reel for $104, $279 reel for $156, $180 rod for $75, $225 rod for $87.  You just got to keep looking.  Walmart Online has some super deals at times.
