Oklawaha River trip

We had an epic time on the Oklawaha . My son , his wife, my grandson and me met up with some friends. I had been needing to get away for a long time.
My son coming into town was a good reason to go. We camped at Rodman Campground and enjoyed the fresh , pine scented air and peace and quiet.

Joe had gotten there the day before and caught a nice mess of fish.

We got started early and went by Rodman dam as we started down the stretch of river below the dam. We went upriver and found a spot they had done well at the day before. Caught some there before entering a side creek. We moved several times and caught multiple fish at each stop.
Bream beds were everywhere. We caught Redbreast , shellcrackers ( red ears ), Bluegills, and stumpknockers , (spotted sunfish) , also caught numerous catfish , and a big gar. Almost caught a gator along with all the fish.

Big fish was an 8 pound catfish. We lost count of how many fish we caught and didn’t care…

I had such a good time I’m already conniving how to do it again soon…😀

Looks like a lot of fun in a beautiful and tranquil setting. The red belly is a fine panfish that can be caught in my neck of the woods, too.

Good Fishing

I had such a good time. I love bass fishing but I really enjoy river “ meat” fishing too. Used to do it a lot when I was in my teens to 30’s.
By the way, the bass were just anialating something on top. Couldn’t get them to bite anything though.

Same thing happened to me this morning.

You sure pick a beautiful place to fish. I miss fishing the Ocklawaha. It’s been years. Used to put in at Nelson’s fish camp. I always felt like it was going back in time. You guys really tore them up. 👍👍

We also threw back a lot of bream we could have kept. With 5 of us in the boat there was at least 1 fish coming in at all times. Multiple fish many times.

Yes, the Oklawaha is still a very wild and scenic river. Like most of Florida was 50 years ago. The Gators are mating- we heard a couple males doing their grunt up in the little creek we were in. Hadn’t heard that in a while….

It’s funny you said that. The first time I fished there, I heard what I thought was someone that couldn’t get their small outboard started. So I fired up and went over to the sound to see if they needed help. To my surprise it was a big ole male gator growling and doing his vibrations.
