Swapping hooks on inline spinners

Featured Replies

I wanted to switch out the hooks on some of my inline spinners and I realized almost all of them are joined directly to the body of the spinner.  Has anyone here swapped hooks on a mepps agila or a Panther Martin?  Did you dissemble or just cut off the original hook?  Do you think adding a split ring will make them foul more often?

I cut the hook off and added a split ring before replacing the hook

We have to do this for some rivers because of regs.

@Scott F Nailed it.

a solid hook that we use in the northwest is the siwash hook.

depending on the size of the treble size 2-6 generally will fit the bill. Salmon worthy spinners might see a size one.

I make my own inline spinners and I always use split ring to join the body to the hook.

Why?

1) You can easily change out a hook.

2) I think the split ring helps to greatly reduce the leverage a larger fish has when they try to throw the hook (pure opinion).

3) Sometimes that wee bit of extra length might help to catch those short strikers.

That split ring also keeps them from bending up Roostertails as much.

I also use a split ring for the same above reasons. Cut off old hook put on new split ring and hook and you are done.

I bought these off of Ali Express a few years ago.  Much nicer than they look in the photos.  They were $10.80 when I purchased them though.

@Crankin4Bass  The standard in the pacific nw is the Siwash hook. Gamakatsu makes siwash hooks. They are solid and strong. You will not be disappointed if you buy siwash from a reputable hook making company.
