Braid memory??

Featured Replies

Using new braid and not paying attention I just spooled some suffix 131 the wrong way on a couple of casting reels, with the spool vertical and the braid coming out of the bottom of the spool. I was always under the impression that it didn’t matter which way you spooled braid because it has no memory but after looking online it seems like everyone says it does matter which direction braid goes on. I’m also wondering if the 131 will have more memory because of its sinking design and g core fiber? Not exactly sure what I should do now. Wrap the line back on the spool the way it came off and then flip the spool over and put it back on the reel?

Leave it - I throw the spool in the bottom of the boat and just wind the line on with braid. Wouldn’t surprise me if there was a little stiffness at first - seems common with most braid - but haven’t used 131 (have used 832 though). My YGK SS112 sinking has almost none, but everyone probably has their own perception of “memory.”

Thanks! After I fish it a bit any of the tiny memory left over should go away? If I did something like let out my line behind the boat going at a slow speed and then reel it back in would that make sure it wasn’t an issue?

Most braids “soften up” in my experience after some use, probably because many have some type of coating that probably wears away over time, plus natural stretching and bending. The line dragging in water seems to help mono and fluoro untwist, but I’ve never bothered with it using braid. I’m not convinced it reacts the same way. Braid twisting is usually more concentrated near the end of the line where you tie on, so I just pull out 20-30 ft and manually twist it back to normal between trips if it seems excessive or problematic.

I fish both 832 and 131 now and the 131 is a good bit stiffer.  Mine hasn’t softened up yet after a full year.  The only thing I don’t like about it is that it doesn’t come in a higher visibility.  Trying to watch my line this morning on a grey day with green water and plenty of trees as backdrop-  next to impossible.  I’m thinking of getting a hot pink sharpie.

Huh I wonder if it will hold more memory then, I might try winding it back onto the spool.

I doubt if you did this that you would then know if it helped or not.  Just go fishing.  I don't even remember how I have the spools oriented when filling casting reels.  Probably has gone both ways, and I've never had a problem.

No, it still doesn’t hold memory from line twist.  Just make a couple long casts next time out and it will be just fine.

You ran the line behind the boat and reeled back on resolved any spooling issue

I spray braid with KVD conditioner.  It softens it and makes it quieter.
