What determines the size bait you pick??

Look at Greg Hackney video on his subject posted by Glenn.

ROF is affected by the bulk of the trailer plus the jig weight. Warmer water post spawn to early summer increase jig weight and reduce trailer bulk with added movements.

R.O.F. 😉

Body of water, time of year. And I’ll make adjustments on the water based on what’s working.

I have said, I am a dedicated finesse fisherman.  My range for baits starts with 2.5 inch Ned baits and ended with a 5 inch class of pro Senkos or Kut tails which are smaller diameter than regular 5 inch Senkos.  Then the massive, huge, heavy, swimbait fad started and I watched catches where the bass was smaller than the bait and it ruined my entire perception of what is a productive bait size. 😂

Thanks for the great answers everyone!

It's always easier until a manufacturer starts making 5 sizes of a bait. LOL.

Generally I have an idea for said body of water but new bodies.of water I generally go with a mid size bait.

My range of baits is now 2" to 10", and I'm in Texas. One of the big fish guys mentioned something almost in passing, that really got my attention - most of the lures presented to fish are between 3" and 7" so if you are trying to catch bigs, keep that in mind.

So I default to big, bigger, and biggest as much as I possibly can.  In fairness, we have gizzard shad so it's not crazy. And I have a crappie rig tied up now, but I think that's really a winter bass deal.

The exception is a bladed jig, but even there I'm experimenting with a big blade bladed jig with a 7" fluke as a trailer.
