High-End Texas-Rig Dropshot Spinning Rod

Featured Replies

Looking to replace a P5 Addermine that just snapped on me. Probably going to go with something in the used market to save a couple extra bucks.

Here are some options I’m looking into:

- Just get the same P5 Addermine again
- NRX+ 822S DSR

- NRX+ 822S SYR (have no idea how to this compares to the DSR as I haven’t used either)
- Daiwa Steez AGS 7’1 ML Finesse Game Special

Heard the X10 Jade Python is great too. I’m open to any other suggestions in the high-end price range. If anyone’s had experience with the P5 Addermine and can compare other rods that would be a plus!!

What weights are you normally using?

3/16-3/8oz. Open water and through some grass

I would go with something more stout than the 822. Especially if that’s the lowest. The 872s is the same two rating, but it definitely fishes heavier than the 822. I wouldn’t like 3/8 on the 822. But the NRX is a good choice.

Maybe not high end enough but I love my 72ML Expride for dropshot.   About 90%+ of my dropshoting is Texas rigged, 1-1/0 Owner Cover Shot and a Missile Baits magic worm.  Around and in grass.  I feel like its more of a ML+ power.  Sensitive soft tip and then lifts into some decent backbone for the hookset.  I feel like the longer rods are better for texas rigged hook dropshots vs those traditional 6-8 to 6-10 dropshot rods.

What’s an equivalent of the 7’2 ML B Spinning Expride in the NRX+, P5, and Daiwa Steez AGS lines? I love the 7’2 ML I own it and have it listed for sale but might need it until I find a replacement.

I would imagine the NRX+ 872s would be in that area.  I don't own that one but do own a NRX+ 852s which I'm not sure has the right tip for dropshot but haven't actually tried using it for that.

I have the 852 and I agree it’s too powerful for lighter line applications IMO. i’ve fet the 872 and I think its just a smidge too powerful for what I’m looking for. Looking for a ML+ essentially

How fast of an action are you looking for? The 7’6” steez is a sweet rod, but I feel like you want a faster rod for drop shot.

Looking for something similar to an Expride B 7’2 ML. More of a ML+ style but super sensitive. NRX+ 852S is too stiff. P5 Addermine was nice but not the best casting distance-wise. Something 7’0+ would be nice but not longer than 7’4. I heard great things about the Steez AGS 7’1 ML Finesse Game Special. Don’t see any used ones for sale at the moment. Open to other suggestions

i cant help you with a higher end option.1 do have an addermine as my dropshot rod and i have to say if i broke it it would be the one rod i would pay full price to replace again. speaing of have you made a warranty claim? i also have the expride 72ml and it is a great texas rig and open hook ds rod. you could use it until your warranty is taken care of.

I bought it used so not really much I can do anymore. Don’t want to get it rebuilt wither because it wont have the same action as before. I’m going to use my expride in the meanwhile like you said, until I get a replacement Addermine or another rod

I use the NRX+ 842S SJR for drop shot. The taper is a little slower but it gets the job done. I use up to 1/4oz weights but it might be able to handle a 3/8oz depending on the bait.

On a side note, I have been thinking of picking up the new GLX 863S DSR for bigger drop shot rigs but it has become a technique that I don't tend to use as often as I should.

you have a Windbuster?  that no good for this?

I kinda want to try the Jade Python simply because my BanderSnatch is so kicking butt.    that X10 line might be awesome.  save a Benjamin in the process.

Same here just I use conquest 842S instead.  3/8 dragging is doable but it's no problem at all dropping straight down on fish for me.

You don’t need a high end spinning rod for drop shot as the weight is below the hook, no issue with strike detection.

Flexible tip, good mid section to control the bass and light weight rod.

I would suggest the cork series Expride ML or new Okuma X series spinning rods.

I’m only getting rid of the 7’2 ML Expride so that I can upgrade to something in the P5, NRX+, or Steez AGS lines. Otherwise I’m rocking with it till I find a replacement. I’m still narrowing it down to these three:

- P5 Addermine

- Steez AGS Finesse Game Special

- NRX+ 822S DSR

Some people have told me the 822 is a little softer than the 7’2 ML Expride but ‘m looking something equivalent in action to the Expride. Anyone know how the Addermine and Finesse Game Special compare? I have no idea how the Steez rod compares since Ive never fished with it.

I would be 110% okay with another Addermine. I’m just hesitant on the P5s now after breaking one and hearing a lot of others break theirs too. Havent heard the same about the Steez AGS or NRX+ lines as often.

If your Texas rigging I really don't think you'll be happy with the 822DSR.
