My Setup (What do ya'll think)

Featured Replies

I have a 6'6'' medium spinning Ugly Stik with a size 3000 Pflueger President spinning reel with 12 lbs fluorocarbon. I also have a Abu Garcia Max X Baitcast Combo with 15 lbs mono. I have spinnerbaits, crankbaits, a single buzzbait, jigs, a whopper plopper, a frog, some small poppers, crankbaits (small and regular sized) squarebills and medium divers, some big and small jerkbaits, plenty of softplastics (5'' inch worms, 4-5 inch swimbaits, 3-4 inch flukes). I also have a trout/panfish rod that I can throw all my little inline spinners, and spoons, and small swimbaits, etc. I know you want a strong rod with 50+ lbs of braid for froggin but i really won't be doing that much. Can I realistically fish solidly for bass with those two first rods and reel combos I've mentioned. I can use my mono baitcaster for my topwater and other lures (I know fluoro is better for cranks and such but mono can still do it if I'm not mistaken). I can use my spinning setup for finnesse, cranks, or whatever beside topwater. What do ya'll think? I'm a low maintenance guy. I'm not gonna go try to become a tournament fisherman. I plan on using worms on the river, and small creeks in the Ozarks where I live. I plan on doing catfishing out the white river. I plan on going on small creek fishing adventures. I've got other rods and reels for that. Point is, I'm no big shot fisherman. I just want to know that what I am using WILL DO THE JOB. Thank you.

Provided you aren’t fishing extremely heavy cover, generally speaking, yes these combos will allow you to catch bass.

You may not like how that 14lb fluoro behaves on spinning gear, but you say you’re a low maintenance guy so you may not notice or care.

12# FC on a Pflueger 30? Not going to be a fun time. 30 size in Pfluegers is a 2500 for everyone else, and going above 8# test is going to 'test' your patience. I would go 30# braid to 12# FC leader on that rig if you're dead-set on that heavy of FC line on the reel.

I agree with the above comments. I would bet  you'll be saying a few choice words using that fluro on spinning gear...wind knots galore!!! I hated spinning gear all my life until I discovered braid to fluro or mono. Now it's my finesse go to.

It's not wind-knots he'd be dealing with - it's the line springing off the spool by itself before he even casts that'd be the main issue.

Sounds to me like you’ve got what you need 👍 There’s always going to be a “better” setup to have or a better line to try or a better this or that. Fishing is fueled by the best marketers in the world.

That said, I do tend to agree with everyone else about the flourocarbon on the spinning reel. I wouldn’t run out and buy new line, but know that you are likely to start having issues with it over time.

Once I put my kids in the canoe/kayak with me I realized much of the rules I thought applied, aren’t rules at all. My youngest son catches bass with a frog on a medium bait caster with 12lb mono. He also catches em with a buzz bait on a Ned rig rod with 6lb line. 2oz glide on a MH rod? Why not. I spend all this time and money trying to set it all up correctly and he comes in and says “why not this rod?” - and proceeds to catch fish 😁 nothing is impossible, just slightly more suited to this or that.

You're what I call a Field and Stream angler and from time to time some good articles in the publication about creek fishing can be read.

Bass fishing doesn't have to be complicated, just present the bait and manage the drag.

Wife has caught several 2# bass while fishing for Bluegill on a Zebco 33 micro bullet, 4# flouro.

@MN Fisheradvice will prevent future frustration.

12# flouro on smaller spinning tackle will eventually rear it's ugly head, uncoiling and giving you a nice 8ft cast.

Other than that you'll be fine with your chosen gear and learn as you go.

I've got to concur with the rest. the 12# FC on spinning will give you problems. The line is just too stiff and has too much memory.  6-8 lb mono or go with 20# braid to a FC or Mono leader on the spinning rod.

I load my 3000 Pflueger with 10# mono . Fluorocarbon is a different animal though. Everyone I know that uses fluorocarbon only go up to 8# on a reel that size.

Listen to the advice posted previously about your spinning setup, it's really good. I'm in the "always use braid on a spinning rod" camp, but lighter fluoro can work too. Get that sorted out and your current setup will serve you well, as long as your casting rod is stout enough (you didn't say what power it is).

Very true!!!

I’d put 15lb braid with 10lb leader on your spinning rig and 20lb braid with 12lb leader on your caster. You could bump up on both if needed for leader. Both sizes of braid have very small diameter and will cast and feel very solid for you.

I never go lower than 30# braid on casting gear - too much dig in of the thinner line when under tension which causes bird's nests. 20# braid is what I put on MH/F spinning rigs.
