I'm getting better, but I can't seem to figure this one out....

Featured Replies

I've begun to regularly catch fish, which is awesome.  However, a lake I fish frequently with extremely clear water has an area that I've located where I can visually see a few 4-5 pounders every time I go over there.  I caught one by jigging a shad imitation a few weeks ago but that appears to have been a fluke. This area is about 10-12 feet deep with matted vegetation on the bottom.  I'm not sure how to get to these guys.  Stuff I throw ends up getting tangled up on the bottom.  A google search keeps linking me to articles telling me to "punch" through the vegetation.  This doesn't really apply as the matted vegetation is on the bottom. Yesterday I threw the shad imitation again and a couple followed and one took a bit at the tail and then took off.  How do you approach matted vegetation on the bottom?  I was thinking about trying a drop shot next time?  Thoughts?  Thanks!

If you can see them, they can see you.  Back off and make longer casts for starters.

What I will do is mark the location on my GPS, leave for a while, then approach it later stealth mode, and make a longer cast.  Sometimes it works.  As soon as you are on top of them, it's over.

Sounds like a good situation for a wacky rig or a Neko rig. Both are light enough they don’t tend to bury in vegetation or a fish will catch them on the drop before they even make it to the grass. If the weeds are fairly uniform depth, you can count down and keep the bait just above the grass during your retrieve. Like was mentioned, keep back off the spot and make longer cast, it can make a big difference in clear water.

X2 on the wacky. Another option is a weightless t-rigged worm or a weightless fluke lightly jerked across the tops of the weeds.

And X3 on putting yourself a bit further from them.

I seem to have the best luck fishing submerged weed beds on cloudy/overcast days. My first choice is casting a charthouses spinnerbait and running it over top of the weeds. That's how I caught the one in my picture, my PB.

The dropshot is definitely worth a shot, adjust leader length for vegetation and fish depth and use the lightest weight that you can effectively fish and straight fluoro line.
