Window Weights for anchor?

Featured Replies

My son lost our navy anchor over the weekend. We have a 17 ft lund aluminum boat.  I have a bunch of window sash weights and was curious if welding some of these together to make a 20 or 25 lb anchor would work well?  Inland lakes and rivers in upper Midwest is primary use areas.

Can add feet for diggers as well with scrap iron, but feel I'd rather stay away from that if possible.  The weights would be relatively snag free.

Thanks

I used one for my kayak anchor for a couple years until I lost it. Actually worked really well and it was free so no complaints.

They work very well.  I wish I had a few.

I can see that working, would be considerably classier than my Yuban can full of concrete as well.

I used them for years on my canoe. One or two on a lake and added a couple more when on a river.

I’d paint them for the rust if they’re cast iron, and I wouldn’t weld them. I’d get a small chain and caribiner or other option so that I could add/subtract weight based on wind and current. You may be on to something…

Free is probably the best thing.

Not welding them and being able to add and subtract would be a great idea.  They all have the eyelets cast in already so an easy way to take on and off.  Thanks for the idea

You can often find widow weights at architectural salvage places, or at building material recycling stores. They are usually about $2.00 each around here.
