I do a lot of finesse fishing.  Is anyone out there using a baitcaster for finesse as well?  Curious to your thoughts.

Finesse fishing is one of the only techniques when I use a spinning rig.  I use light weight, light line, and light rod to "feel" the fish better when they bite.  With all of this light gear, I have to tighten the spool, brake, and thumb the line more on the cast to avoid backlashing.  Then I can't get a long cast if I need to.  IMO spinning gear is best for finesse....and I LOVE my baitcasters.

Ronnie, thanks for the tip on the Shimano 50MG.  However, it's a $250 reel.  I'm looking to get a reel in the $100 to $150 range.  That being said, should I be looking to get something very close to the 50MG.  ie...it appears that I need to get a lower ratio for finesse fishing, such as 4:1 or 5:1.  Now, will that reel also work well for cranks, jerks, jigs, etc...

I'm looking to get the biggest bang for my buck.  Basically, another set up that I can use for with much versatility.  I'm not fishing in any circuits yet and don't have a dozen rods on the boat.

I've never fished a Pixy, but they both seem to be out Vinnie's price range. He would probably be better off with a spinning rig for finesse fishing in his price range. I don't know of a baitcaster that would be considered 'finesse' that would also fish jigs & crankbaits, but I don't know too much.

I'm using a Curado 100D with a Shimano Crucial Drop Shot rod.   The set up is very well balanced and very very sensitive.   If your budget limits you on the reel, take a look at the Shimano Citica 100DSV...pretty much the same reel as the Curado 100D which is a kissing cousin to the Chronarch 50mg.

The Shimano Citica 100DSV looks pretty good.  With a 6.2:1 gear ratio and 3+1 bearings, will I be able to crank with this also?

A curado 100 DSV would work very well for cranks as well, not quite as sure for finesse work. I just bought one a few days ago & love it alot. But, that said, I'll try some finesse/plastics on it just to satisfy my curiosity, but expect I'll rely on my TD fuego for that type of work. If your looking for a true 'all purpose' reel like this, the 100 D might be a better choice. If you want line capacity, the 100 DSV is it. Of course, I defer to Raul, Ronnie, Roadwarrior among many others who know finesse fishing better than me.

For under $150 I would go with the Citica 100. You may be able to find a Curado on e-bay for around $150. There is no doubt that I would go with one of these models in your price range. Either would serve both purposes. The rod will have to be the biggest compromise. I would look for a medium fast rod with a bit of a soft tip to compensate for crankin.

Im a shimano guy but never tried the shimano 50 mg iv tried it the first time on a fishing trip down in florida in the everglades and imo the 50 mg is the best finesse reel out there,i was flippin 1/4 to 3/8 oz jigs all day. Its an awsome reel ;D
