DOYO vs BPS Baitcasting reels?

Featured Replies

  • Super User

I see everyone saying that Doyo makes Bass Pro reels. Which model of Doyo reel is which model of BPS reel? Does anyone have the equivalent models of both that can show side by side pictures?

I have a BPS Pro Qualifier 2.

Can someone tell me which Doyo model is this BPS reel? Don't give me a link to a page of 100 Doyo reels for me to figure it out, because I can't. I can't look at them and say "this one" is the right one. But if you can point me to the exact model, then I could compare them, maybe purchase one, and then do a side by side comparison.

Since that model of reel is no longer sold by BPS, perhaps Doyo doesn't make it. Could you also/instead point me to the exact model that is BPS Johnny Morris Platinum reel? https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-johnny-morris-platinum-signature-baitcast-reel

I like the two PQ2s I have, I haven't tried the other's yet. I have been eyeing used Pro Qualifiers though. I saw a video where a guy detailed one and it was solid inside.

It's the older Doyo  gen 3 Lubina platform. Its probably being phased out and why the Lews LFS switched to a different Doyo platform.  Once the stock runs out you'll see a new Pro Qualifyer come out, probably on the same platform as the JM Carbonlite.  The popular 2010s Pro Q was also a Lubina.  It's not actually the 1st gen Pro Q as that name goes back to the 90s and has been many Korean OEM reels.  It once was a round reel.  Were they all Doyo Lubinas or even Doyos?  Don't know but that would be kinda cool in a way.

Thanks @Bigbox99, where do I find the Doyo Lubina series for sale?

You don't.  They only sell in Korea and there aren't Korean fishing shops willing to ship to the US like with JDM reels.  Their buisness is heavily reliant on being an OEM for various brands in the US and there must be some legally binding agreements to prevent sale on US markets and to outright keep the existence of Doyo a secret to the US market.  I've only heard of someone having a buyer in Korea purchase a reel and send it to the US for a Doyo branded Doyo to get here.

Even buying Daiwas from other Daiwa markets has been difficult sometimes.  I've bought lots of Daiwa Japan and Daiwa China reels but Daiwa Scandinavia has some cool stuff that I have only been able to dabble in since there isn't a good online source carrying Daiwa Scandinavia products that will sell to the the US.  I used Waveinn for some Prorex parts and a whole Prorex 300 (purple 1st gen Lexa 300) but that's it.  Daiwa Australia had an olive drab Fuego CT and a Sol TW but there were few retailers willing to ship to the US and prices were crazy high.  Theres lots if cool stuff out there if you are willing to look past what is only offered on the US market.

Your best bet will be EBay or some sort of. Typically Doyo are not sold outside of Korea. I see some overseas website selling them but i don't know if they are legit.

BigBox is this round Pro Qualifier a Doyo? I just rebuilt two of them. I have enjoyed using this very same reel for things like a rat'l trap or a spinner.

These are fairly well built and durable and reliable reels.

Is there a Doyo equivalent to this little round reel?

I just handed my 12 year old son his first baitcast reel and it is also a Doyo Bass Pro 'Pro Qualifier.' I gave him specifically the Pro Qualifier because it has both centrifugal and magnetic braking to hopefully help him learn how to cast with fewer backlashes. He was able to catch 1 fish on the same day he started learning how to cast one of these.

Since he is only 12 and still half sized, he wanted to use his 7' rods but I said no, I think you would be better off right now using the old pistol grip 5' rod. It will be far easier for a little tyke to handle and learn on.

I showed him the round Pro Qualifiers and he said no way dad. Don't like those. Hopefully this will change in time.

But is there a Doyo round reel equivalent to these I am wondering?

Doyo wasn't a thing until 1999 but there were Pinnalce and BPS reels made by some Korean company before 1999.  Pinnacle and Silstar went out of business in 1999 so it's likely that what remained of that operation became Doyo.  I don't know of any Doyo small round reels but there are some Korean made Pinnacle Vision and Ryobi round reels that are very similar if not the same reel in a different brand name.  The hidden gem 90s little round reel is the Abu Black Bax 1600.  Those were sort of like a poor man's Morrum.  Prices have risen on them but you can still find some for cheap.

Black Max predates the Morrum.  Black Max was made from '92-'00, Morrum from '98-'15.  The Morrum was the successor to the original Max reels and were only made side by side for a couple of years.  Both are great reels, but the Max reels don't have the aftermarket support of the Morrum.  The Max series was intended to compete with the Calcutta B, and in turn the Calcutta Conquest was designed to compete with the Morrum and CV-Z.

Yes, but looking at them today the Black Max has a strong resemblance to the Morrum and is cheaper making it appear as a "poor man's Morrum" to me.  At least is semi recent times.  At the rate the 1600 prices are increasing that may no longer be the case.  Last time I looked at these they were dirt cheap but now it's NO TIRE KICKERS I KNOW WHAT I GOT type listings.

I got mine new old stock for $100.  Funny story is I saw it originally on marketplace, guy was on NC and didn't want to ship.  I told him I'd cover shipping and throw him another $20 for his troubles, nope.  A few weeks later, I get an eBay alert for that very reel, dude decided to eBay it.  I told him my offer still stands, "no the Japanese sellers are getting $300".  I told him it will probably go for $100 to $150.  I ended up winning the auction for $100, and he covered shipping.  He'd have made about $50 more accepting my offer when it was on Marketplace.  Instead, he was on the hook for shipping and eBay fees.

When I was pro staff for Bass Pro, in my reel allotment every year, I always got a JLM Signature baitcaster.  The one that comes in the padded box and over the years was gold, blue, or silver and I put them up as kind of mementos because I was a Pro Qualifier and Browning Citori or Midas fan.  I pulled one of the JLM reels the other day and it feels like a boat anchor. 😂 I don’t know if I could throw or all day.  I also have a large collection of the old round reels in various sizes because at one time I thought I was going to throw those more.

What are the odds that on the same day two members here actually use the same almost unheard of word in back to back comments? Citori. Pretty rare indeed.

I have had a Browning Citori round reel for decades. I call it my frankenstein reel because I have to part out other reels just to find parts to keep this one up and running. So it is frankestein'ed together. I can use gears from other Browning reels like the Aggressor, and Zebco and Quantum reels as well. And now maybe also Bass Pro. Since I think Doyo made it, the tooling is all the same or very close.

After reading this thread I pulled it out to compare with the Bass Pro Pro Qualifier round reels and found the Browning Citori is just a little bit larger in diameter.

So now I am curious what is the story on this Browning Citori? It is almost a Calcutta knock off as well. I have had Calcuttas but got rid of them and have kept this knock off Citori instead partly because its so rare of a reel to find, and because its just an experiment reel I keep zapping back life using other reels.

Is this Citori also made to compete with the Calcuttas or those Abu reels?

This old Citori is so smooth to operate. Well broken in. I have gone through about 6 sets of gears for it parted out from other reels. I've never seen another lefty. I have come across same reel with handles on the right only a couple of times. It is a rare reel so I have held onto it. I like to say this is my shiner reel if I ever get around to using shiners. Super smooth and casts really well and built like a tank.

Bass Pro owned the Browning brand which itself owned the Lews brand.  Bass Pro never revived the Lews brand and sold Browning branded reels for whatever reason.  I never understood that.  Anyways some BPS employee or executive that had been working with Doyo for BPS reels left the company and acquired the Lews brand from BPS.  He then re-launched the Lews reels brand using his Doyo contacts and began to kick BPS reels butt.  BPS has also taken a misstep at the time by moving away from Doyo for some of their house brand reels and failed to update their popular Pro Qualifier.

After a few testing the waters $200-$160 halo reels with a strong retro lews influence such as the Speed Spool and BB1, Lews then began to offer cheaper mass produced $100 reels like the LFS that was basically a better Pro Qualifier.  They then further saturated the market and got a whole bunch of people on the Lews bandwagon.  BPS fumbled intergalactic bags on this one.  They were so butthurt about it they banned Lews reels from their stores when they 1st came out.

I have both in the 1600 size.  I was surprised at how well the Black Max handles light lures in wind.  Better than the Morrum in my hands.  Maybe I just need more practice with the Morrums.  I seldom use them because I prefer an LP reel.

Think I will spool one with either 8# mono or 15# braid and put it on a ML rod.  Actually the Morrums already have 8# AN40 so all I need to do is mount one on a ML rod.    Will try the braid on one of the Black Max 1600C reels.  Should look nice on an OG Villain ML.

Love the PQ2 as I think it's the best bang of the buck, I'm trying to buy one on ebay at 7.1.1 but most are in the 6.4.1 ratio right now.

From what I’ve seen over the years there’s no discernible difference in build quality between all the brands built on the shared platforms beyond the chosen features combined to make a given model. It’s a mix and match proposition rather than a strict rebadge. Although some comparisons are virtually identical inside.
