Heading to Potholes WA this week, never been, looking for tips

Featured Replies

I understand it's fall fishing, they're pushing bait into the shallows, moving baits I'm guessing would be good, cranks, jerks, I'll be throwing out shaky minnow. Having never fished there, any particular place to concentrate on? any particular color for softbaits/trailers? I'll be in a kayak. Thanks

The water should be at draw down.  The face of the dam will be good.  Medium running crankbaits in perch colors should be effective.  Hula grubs, tubes and Ned rigs will all come into play.  The Linn Cooley channel is worth a try. Fish can be as deep as 40 plus on the dam end.

The other side of the lake should have the fish pulling out.  The face of those dunes and outside the main creek accesses will have largemouth and some smallmouth.  The fish get in shallow at day break for an hour.  After that I would move out off the shorelines and points and throw shakey heads, football jigs, larger neds and a half ounce Dark Sleeper.  Look for the sunken pallets. You’ll get bit.

^^ This^^  I would add Yamamoto #176 Hula Grubs on 3/16th football jigs are a staple this time of year.  The face of the dam is good fishing, especially around the visible rocks between the island and the dam.  Linde Coulee has both smallmouth and largemouth this time of year.  It's hard to make a bad cast there.

You don't need to venture back in the dunes right now. Most of the fish are stacked on submerged dunes located anywhere from 50-300 yards from the face of the dunes. Some of them get VERY shallow on top, so keep an eye on your depthfinder.  A lot of those dunes have sunken manmade fish structures scattered on them (hint, hint!).

There's a big dropoff in front of the mouth of Frenchman's.  Fish it.  Bass don't hold on it.  They move in and out in wolfpacks. So if you're getting bit and then the bite goes away, wait awhile for the next pack to come through.

You're going to have some GREAT weather!  The fish should be biting. Enjoy!

Good stuff! I've got 5" green pumpkins hula's, I'll be picking up the 176 in all sizes tomorrow, any particular size working?

3/16 oz Football = 4” Hula Grub would be my guess.

PS, 221 is also good.

Yes, 176 is the staple.  I only throw 1/4 ounce whether 4 or 5 inch.  I forget to mention that a number of rock formations should be showing at the Linde Coolie end of the dam.  There are saddles between many of them.  Those saddles can be great.  I run a Deep Little N in those locations with good results.  Perch, goby and chartreuse blue back are good.
