Winterizing Boat Guide

Featured Replies

I bought my first boat this summer. It’s a 1995 Alweld 17 foot Jon Boat with a 95’ 70HP Yamaha 2 Stroke Engine. I live in North Arkansas. We have very mixed weather, with little to no snow but we still have a relatively cold winter. I plan on fishing this winter a decent amount. At least twice a month. What steps can I take to protect my boat. I can’t fully winterize it. But I don’t want any problems, ESPECIALLY with my engine. Any and all advice is appreciated.

Change the lower unit fluid.  Change any fuel filters. Check the spark plugs.  Replace impeller if needed.  Fish when you can.

After you pull it out after the day in the water, be sure to put the motor down to let all the water drain out. (to avoid freezing)

If your rig has a live well, the pump(s) and piping can hold water. Having that freeze can be problematic.

To winterize a livewell system by blowing out water, drain as much as possible first, then use a low-pressure air compressor to blow out any remaining water from the lines and pump. First, turn off the pump and drain the livewell tank completely. Then, connect a low-pressure (under 30-45 PSI) air compressor to the system, and blow air through the lines, opening all faucets and outlets until no more water sprays out. I have heard of folks that use awet/dryyvacuum,m but getting a good seal can be tricky.

Good luck

I fish all winter.  If it's time to change the lower unit oil I do it in the late fall.  When I'm pulling out I lower the motor all the way down while I'm still on the incline of the ramp.  I drain the live well.  Other than that,  I don't do anything.  It all depends on the climate you're in.
