Hate passing by these idiots after a bunch of them flew straight into the grill of my 3/4 ton and caused massive damage.

Doofuses at my front gait just waiting to get run over by something. 😆

Those look like Merriams. That’s a bucket list bird for me.

Heard my first gobble this morning while letting the dogs out. This the season to start messing with them here. I don’t hunt them (the seasons and tags here are screwy and restrictive) but I used to and have all my calls still.

Season A starts here 2 weeks from today. I already have permission to hunt at 3 properties that are adjacent to each other.

I plan to take my 7 year old son with a couple days too.

I went turkey hunting yesterday and today for season A. Stunning weather out there both days.

Yesterday morning I saw about 15 turkeys after some morning gobbling but they went the opposite direction in the fog. I moved my blind after the morning hunt that direction.

Then I went for the evening hunt and sure enough they all came marching back to the roost. But all out of range, about 150 yards out. I watched many of them fly into the roost right at dark, including 4 nice toms.

Got back out there in the dark this morning and put a hen and a Jake decoy out. Did not do any calling. I could see several of them fly down at day break and I heard them gobbling again, but did not spot any on the ground until shortly before 8am. The entire flock started heading my direction. First 7 hens, then a tom. Then another hen, a Jake, and 2 more toms. I had one tom on the very edge of range at 60 yards but I didn't shoot. A few minutes later, another lone hen came my direction but this time much closer. And a trailing tom, right behind her. When that tom spotted my Jake decoy, he wasn't having it. He went into full strut and went right for it. At 25 yards, I dusted him.

Unfortunately my son wasn't able to go with until tomorrow and he's bummed we aren't going now, but I can't pass up a tom like this within range. Don't get many chances. He understood that I might fill my tag before he was able to go.

It's the second biggest turkey I've ever taken, and this is my 20th season. Spurs, beard, and size all indicate a mature adult tom.

My dad has 80 acres of timber that is chuck full of turkeys.

I bought a shotgun probably 15 years ago and some decoys and haven't sat 5 minutes out there.

Maybe I should give it a go one of these years.

I think I'd rather turkey hunt too.
