Looking to purchase 1st fish finder for kayak with some questions

Featured Replies

Im looking to purchase my 1st fish finder and install it on my kayak.

Ive been looking at one of the Garmin striker 4 models and a hummingbird helix 7 model.

So, I have 2 kayaks. A bonafide ss127 and a native slayer propel max 10.

Pending on the body water is how i choose which one I will be using.

I was wondering if I could own one fish finder but use it on either kayak? Could I easily pop one off and throw it on the other one with no big deal? Im guessing you would need multiple transducers and wiring kits??

Is this a thing that's done normally with no big deal and if so what does it take to do it?Im looking to purchase my 1st fish finder and install it on my kayak.

Yes you can do what you want. You’ll need to buy a second transducer and second set of mounts, plus however you run power. But, when I had my kayak I was taking the helix 7/9 off every trip to ride in the truck. I used a yak attack quick release mount and it was fine for the 7 and pushing it for the 9. Plugs in the HBird carrier (not included with FF) which plugs into the back of the head unit.

That said, once you have a double set up it isn’t that much more to have a second head unit so you might end up there once you do the math.

A striker 4 and helix 7 are very different units in capability and size. Size is good for viewing, but a helix 7 is a lot bigger and means a hefty mount whereas the striker is pretty lightweight but you’re not getting any side or down imaging. Figure out what you need before you make that decision.

This is helpful, thank you! Im leaning towards the garmin for a few reasons. Ive heard they are pretty simple and user friendly and I like the price point of course too, especially for my first one since I really don't know what I need yet besides depth, water temp and shows me structure directly below me.

Another question i have is on one of my kayaks I have 12,volt 100amp for a trolling motor.

Can I hook the depth finder up to that one battery and power both of them at same time with no issues?

Maybe. Since you have it you can try it and see with no major investment. But a separate battery for the FF is going to ensure no problems.

You could mount separate transducers and batteries on each boat, and move the head units between the two.

If the spacing worked on both boats, you could use a Yak Attack Cell Block with a Nocqua or similar battery, and move the entire setup between boats.

141 Transducer Mount with Gear Head Adapter & 440-4 Low P...

Designed for kayaks and small boat use - transducer arm telescopes from 11.5" to 18" and swivels 360 degrees - includes 438 adapter and low-profile track.

I don't run sonar if I'm river fishing, so it's nice to take everything off and not have to worry about bashing the transducer on rocks.

I bought the Stryker 4 vivid cv witha mount from Amazon and the yak attack cell block with transducer arm

You can put it all on and take it off in 3 minutes

Use it on any kayak with a track

So the whole setup would come off in 3 minutes? I have a bonafide ss107 and I’m looking at getting a striker for my first fish finder. I was thinking about just mounting it on the center dry box like other people have done. But I’m not sure if that would require the transducer to stay on normally. I am car topping so it has to all come off easily.

buy the FF and a single good battery. then all you need are an extra set of power hookups and transducer and cordage and an additional mount. swap away!

I assume both kayaks have the accommodations for the transducer. my 7" screen wobbled, but I DIY'd a solution that mitigated the issue. (Hobie solution)

Yes it makes it so easy

I’m trying to figure out how to resize a photo on iPhone

If I can I’ll post it and show you

It really is that easy

3 min and I carry everything in a duffle bag

Here is another option. As long as you can get to the interior of your hull. If you can get to the interior of both kayaks then you only need one transducer and one mount.
