Hair jigs?

I know nothing about hair jigs, other than those little ones you use for crappie. It appears people use hair jigs for bass? So probably 1/4oz? Is there a preferred brand?

I see these and they are dirt cheap. Good entry point? https://www.basspro.com/p/kalins-hand-tied-marabou-jig

Vmc or punisher jigs. 3/16 is what I throw . I used to like Jimmy Ds but I think there closed down. Gets bites in tough conditions

Those small cheap ones from the stores can work, but sometimes they have real weak hooks that decent sized bass can bend out. Tying them yourself is the best way but that’s obviously not for everyone.

Hair jigs are great, though. Use the same sizes you’d use for a jig and plastic and generally in the same sort of way. The advantage hair has is it’s very subtle and produces an action plastics struggle to mimic. A lot of people like using them in the cold for that reason but they can work year round.

I especially like using marabou jigs under a bobber so the waves can produce a very subtle jigging action. Weighted floats for when I want to keep the jig in a certain area, unweighted when I want to let it drift.

Hopping them along the bottom also works very well and having lots of hair on them can really help slow the fall rate.

I remember a white Doll Fly jig was great for sticking Black River smallmouths when I was a kid.

I have a couple of newer Spro hair jigs in the boat, but haven’t gotten around to throwing them yet.

Hair jigs are tied with bucktail.

Marabou jigs are tied with feathers so technically not “hair jigs per se”.

I tie hair jigs on 1/8-1/4 oz heads. Same for marabou jigs.

Hair jigs have much less movement than marabou. They are a good baitfish imitation where marabou can mimic a wider range of prey.

These are some of my preferred hair jig colors.

I you have friends who hunt tree squirrels, have them save the tails for you. The hair makes excellent nigs. A friend loves to eat squirrel. He doesn’t hunt. I I e him the squirrels I shoot’s and he use the tails to tie bugs for me. Win-win

I like the VMC jigs. I use both the Dominator marabou jigs and the Moon Tail hair jig. I like both 1/16th ounce and 1/8th ounce for the ponds I fish.
