Swing Away / Fold Away Trailer Hitch

Featured Replies

Pivot bolt/Hinge bolt sheared off. Anyone ever have this happen? You would think I was speaking a foreign language when I inquired about a replacement bolt at several locations here around Chattanooga. Two places actually perform service work on bass boats. The other was a dedicated specialty truck and trailer repair and sales operation. Could not get any online help. Oh well, guess I will head to the local hardware store in hopes of finding a grade 8 bolt in the correct size. I would love to hear from anyone that has experienced this issue. Sheared bolt, not lack of service. 🤣 thanks in advance.

If your local stores don't have what you need, you might try etrailer.com or eastermarine.com.

Are you talking about a swing tongue on your trailer or on the tow vehicle?

I’ve been searching high and low for a ball hitch that has cups for the keeper cables/chains instead of fishing them under the bumper to the frame mounted hitch. I have a buddy who has them and I haven’t been able to find a duplicate.

I found a couple choices online. My post is awaiting approval because I put links in it. Just give it a few.

Hope you’re able to find a solution to get out on the water. Any particular trailer make or in the event we run into this problem?

Those bolts are pretty substantial, how did it get broken?

I did try etrailer. they specifically stated that they do not stock the bolts. I will try the other you site you mentioned if I don't have any luck locally. Thank you.

not sure. I thought I was going fishing the other morning. I went to swing the hitch around and it was wobbly. Discovered bolt had sheared off in threaded portion inside of hitch. It broke above the nut. Must have come off during travels. Twenty years old. No hard stops or starts or jerky towing.

These should be a Grade 5 bolt, not a Grade 8. Grade 8’s have a tendency to fail/break under a shear load, where a Grade 5 will bend prior to failure.

Sketchy! I'm glad you found it before you were towing it.
