Braided Line/Hook problem

Featured Replies

I am fishing Power Pro 10 lb. test(2 lb. diameter) and many times after catching a fish the line will catch in the eye of the hook where the "loose" end of the eye meets the shank.  If I get another bite or rip through some weeds the braid will actually snap leaving the knot still in good shape(just the line around the eye snaps).  Sometimes the line is so lodged in there that I can't get it out and I just retie.  This happens very frequently so I don't want to retie this often.  I've read a Gary Yamamoto article where he uses a 20 ft. fluorocarbon leader but I'm not sure I want to use that much fluorocarbon when I'm trying to use braided line.  I could put a smaller fluorocarbon leader but then there would be more stress on that line to line knot when I have a fish on.  I also thought about maybe using some silicone or other product to close the small gap in the eye of the hook so the line will not get caught.  If you guys have any other ideas let me know.

Currently I'm using VMC hooks with a Uni knot.  I'm going to try a Gamakatsu hook this weekend and see if I have the same problem.  It looks like the Gammy does not have quite as much of a gap at the eye and the line may not be able to get jammed in there.  If so I may just swich hook brands.  I could go to a higher diameter line but I really like the Power Pro 10 lb. test and I have no need for more strength.  Let me know if any of you have had this problem or if you have any solutions.  Thanks.

I actually had a similar problem but using bigger line and bigger hooks.  Same concept though so I just upped the diameter of my line.  I used to use 8lb diameter in saltwater but I had the problem of breakoffs so I went to the 12 lb diameter.  In your case I'd go from the 2lb diameter maybe even up to 6lb.  Just depends on your preference.  Another alternative may be to use what people down here call quick clips.  It's just a swivel that has a clip type device on one end so you could just tie onto the swivel and not worry about the hook breaking the line.  They've held up to 12lb redfish so they should do the job just fine.

I am using 10# braid also, but i use 6# or 10# floro leader about 8 or 10ft long.   I use Owner hooks and have never had the problem you discribed.  I have broken the line to line Uni-Uni knot when i go to hard on my hookset with the 6# floro.  I think that was related to using a new MH rod that didnt give much.  I dont break that knot much anymore.

I believe in the visibility factor of floro.  It sounds like switching hooks is your quickest fix.

from what it sounds like your having the same issue i have where the knot basically stays in tact and just slides off the hook through that small slit, i've turned to SUPERGLUE! it works fine! and use it on the knot between the leader and the braid also if you go that route, never be withouth superglue when it comes to knots. it's not a hook issue stay with what you're comfortable with, just use superglue! and get the kind you can either drop on or rub on but not the kind the you have to push is on.

Yup what he said SUERGLUE and Braid go together like peas and carrots and u will find many other uses also its really good to keep your plastics from sliding down ur hook 8-)

Is super glue to fishermen what duct tape is to a do-it-yourselfer.  I havent tried it yet, but I think I will get a tube.

yes! superglue is a must have, i forget it all the time and that's how I know it's a must have...

"if only I had some superglue, DOH!"

Thanks for the ideas guys.  I actually just had the wife pick up some superglue as I had a feeling I would be able to make it work somehow.

Do most of you use a leader rather than tie directly?  I've never used a leader as I have seen no drop-off in catch rate since switching to braid and tying direct.  I wouldn't mind putting a couple feet of leader but then I have to decide if I should do a line to line knot(which would take some time to trust) or use a small barrel swivel or quick clip as suggested.  My concern with those is that I mainly fish worms and I would not want to alter the fall with the barrel swivel or clip but I could test it at the side of the boat and see how it does.

i've always just done braid straight to hook, i've been thinking more and more about a leader but I am still reluctant and not too sold yet on the idea, fishing has been slow, so i'm probably just trying to hard to find a legitament excuse for why they aren't biting... I'll let you know if I make the switch...

Braid straight to the hook is great as long as visibility or high pressure is not involved.  I prefer to use a double-line clinch knot when tying both braid and small diameter monos.   You basically double your line through the eye (like you would if you were starting to tie a Palomar), and then tie a normal clinch knot with the doubled line (don't go back through the loop, however, with the mono - - no need).

I find myself using leaders most of the time - around 8' or so of various copolymers depending on the conditions.  Just the way I like to roll... :)

Go to Gamakatsu hooks.  U won't have that problem again.  If u want use superglue but i never had to.

Truthfully, I cannot relate to your problem.

What is Super Glue?

You have issuse with hooks. Why do we allow them to charge top $ for faulty products. Get your pliers out and sqeeze them shut.
