new line getting kinks

Featured Replies

I have been using the Yo. hybrid in 10lbs.   A week ago I put new line on.  All I have been fishing with is plastic worms.  The reel is a Abu Garcia Revo.  My line is getting a tone of kinks in it.  Its holding the shape of the reel spool.  Anybody else having this problem?

Now I know putting braid then mono would probably take care of the problem but I'm not a fan of braid.

So what can I do?

Do you mean kinks or it's spiralled (i.e. memory from the spool)?  If it's holding the shape of the reel it can't be kinked since the reel is round.  If it's a memory problem I would suggest some line conditioner.  I have not had problems at all with Yozuri Hybrid.  I've used it quite a bit.  I do use line conditioner alot though out of habit.

Backlashes can cause kinks big time.  If it's actual kinks that you have I would say you have a problem other than the line.

What do you mean by braid then mono?  Spool up braid and use mono as a leader?  I personally only use braid for specific situations and would not recommend it as a way to fix your kink problem.  I'd find the root of the problem and correct that.

Kinking and coiling are not the same, hearing of a too much coiling issue with copolymer is not new, on the contrary, too much coiling with copoly is the rule if you spool in "heavy" copoly like 10 lb test. Line conditioner is going to help .... a little, the problem solves when you reduce the test with copoly, Yo Zuri Hybrid breaks a an incredibly high tensile point, Roadwarior is the resident Yo Zuri Hybrid guru and knows more about that line than anybody else here ( maybe he can lighten us on the breaking strength of that line ) but 10 lbs for Yo Zuri Hybrid looks like an overkill to me.

I 've fished with copoly ( P-Line CXX 12 lbs ) and the coiling is worse than with 20 lb test nylon.

By "kinks" do you mean weak spots resulting from backlash? I don't know of any other reason why you woiuld be having that type of problem with a baitcaster. Regarding memory from storage (shaping), fish your heaviest spinnerbait with a tailer for fifteen minutes and it will disappear entirely.

If you are fishing from a boat you can troll your line which takes care of 99% of all problems. "Walking" your line in a field will accomplish about the same thing. However, as Raul noted, it seems to me there may be another fundamental problem that we are not seeing. Baitcasters should be spooled with the line spool upright (like with a pencil). If you spooled it flat like you would with spinning tackle that will result in VERY twisted line if it is put on backwards.

That's all I can think off. #10 Yo-Zuri should NOT be a problem for you.
