100$ Rod

Featured Replies

Ok, im upgrading my gear soon and would like some input on what rod i should get...i have about 200$ to spend.I need a reel also, and would like some extra money i could spend on lures as I dont have much selction. I was Going to get a BPS extreme and pflueger president spinning combo when it was on sale fore 100$. well i waited a little to long and its not on sale anymore. it got me considering just dishin out a little more doe and getting a higher quality rod.I have never used a rod much better than an ugly stik and a couple other cheap poles borrowed from friends. At BPS they have some Avid rods on sale for 120$ and am definitly considering this. but i just wanted to get some other opinions before making the purchase. This rod will be my all around rod cuz i only fish from the shore and dont want to tote around more than 1 setup....ive never used a baitcaster so am probably gonna get a spinning setup, the baits i use most are probably jerkbaits, spinnerbaits and soft plastics. The waters i usually fish are kind of weedy also. I'm just looking for any input on a good all around rod that can be found for around 100$ and maybe some suggestions on length and power. Any input is greatly aprriciated.

BTW im not sure on what line ill use but i hear many good things about yo-zuri hybrid ultra soft... i was just wondering if this line will work well with topwater lures seeing as it sinks....thanks for any input guys.

Welcome aboard!

First of all, Yo-Zuri Hybrid and Hybrid Ultra Soft float, they do NOT sink.

St. Croix Avids are available other places for $60- $80 depending on the model. Have some patience and BPS will be coming down shortly or shop around. Same story with the Shimano Stradic 2500, Reed's Family Outdoor Outfitters is offering the reel for $94, but it might be bought cheaper other places. (BTW, these are GREAT products that are simply being upgraded and phased out. That's why they are on "closeout.")

Now to be specific, "good all-around spinning combination." I'll suggest the Avid AS68MXF matched up with a Stradic 2500FH.

Spool on Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #6 (11.9 lb test) and you are good-to-go!

This is the setup I just purchased at Dicks for $140 ($65 for the rod with a $10 off coupon and $75 for the reel). You will have to ask the sales guy to scan the reel and the rod to make sure but they will ring up that price at the register.

Well I live in Cali and I dont beleive theres a Dicks here, does anyone know somewhere else it might be able to be found cheap... or maybe somewhere online?

thanks

In that price range, I really like my 7' MH Fenwick HMG, although a M action might be better for all around.   Around $120, but you might be able to find it on sale for under $100.

Thanks for the pointer fishtank.   I went to Dick's and they have full compliment of Stradics (4000, 2500, 1000) .. it's not like I 'NEEDED' another reel but this seemed like a great buy that I couldn't pass up.    At my Dick's they are 79.99 (unadvertised clearance) but I have a $20.00 off boosters card for my son's football team for any $100 purchase (i picked up some lizards) and ended up getting it for around $59.00.    They also have quite a few Avid spinning rods left that I'm sure I need another of for this nice Stradic...      :;)   The Avids are also 79.99.

You guys are stealing some very nice equipment. Congrats on finding such bargains.  :)
