A couple of questions about spinnerbaits

Featured Replies

Hey gang...I have several rooster tail style spinner baits that just don't spin. Alot of them are brand new. They are straight and true. I've tried the tug when I first start retreiving, and don't crank it too fast. They'll spin once in a while, but alot of times they just won't. I've tried using a little silicone on them too, but it doesn't help. Any tips? Second...I would like to know if Anyone knows where I can get a guide (preferrably with pics) on how to tie a new skirt on a spinnerbait. Thanks  ;)

Try bending the blades a bit at the water and try them out until they start spinning correctly.

Welcome aboard!

Regarding replacing skirts, if you buy the "packaged product" they come with a little rubber band that fits over a little retaining hump on the leadhead. There is nothing to it.

Welcome!  ;D

my rooster tails wont spin either. what you have to do is: go to the store and forget about rooster tails, buy some BLUE FOX!!!!!!!! my fav. blue fox is the vibrax minnow spin, but the vibrax flash i think its called arent bad either.

when you said hwo to tie a new skirt on a spinnerbait, im assuming you mean the rooster tail kind (called inline spinners) since you said "tie" and the skirts on those are hair (or in the roostertail case, rooster tail feathers.) that is tied on to cover the hooks. its very simple, but you need the right equipment. get a fly tying kit, then it will be MUCH easier.

It's a case of "tuning" your lure after you get to the lake.

If you are dealing with a tourney or something like that, you can do it ahead of time, but the idea is the same.

It's a similar problem with many crankbaits. Before using them, you need to test them and make any changes needed before seriously using them.

Yeah...the Blue Fox lures kick butt! I get the flash pack (5 pack - all dif colors) from Walmart for $4.97. I catch crappie, perch, sunnies, and largemouth with them  ;)

When you start the retrieve, give the rod a hard jerk.

That usually gets the spinner working.

Yeah...I've tried that too. I'm guessing these lures just suck  :;)

I'm not a big fan of roostertails. I have a difficult time getting them to spin and stay spinning.  Seems as if you slow the lure down, the spin stops and won't start again.  Honestly, I don't buy any more roostertails.  Mepps or BlueFox or Joe's Flies all work well for me.

Thanks moby. I'm not going to buy any more rooster tails. Not worth the aggravation. It's a shame, because they will catch fish (when they do spin).
