Frog Rod and Reel Combination

Featured Replies

I am going to upgrade my existing hollow body frog combo. I love my Calcutta 200 GTB and All Star Combo, but she could lose some weight, so time to upgrade.  Anyway, I primarily fish SPRO's Bronzeye Frog 65 or Reaction Innovations' Swamp Donkey on Stren 40lb Superbraid.

There are many choices out there for specific frog rods and was wondering if forum members would help me choose a good rod/reel combination.  I currently getting the hots for the Loomis Frog Rod and a Shimano Chronarch B Series or a Japanese Shimano Metanium Mg7.

Any suggestions or ideas I could give to the bait monkey?

Thanks for your input in advance.

If you are interested in buying a G Loomis Frog Rod, I could sell you mine.  It is in very good condition (I used it once) and I realized that I don't use a frog enough to warrant having it.  This rod can cast those SPRO and Swamp Donkeys a mile and is very good for heavy slop.

the combo ive been using is very lite ..... the rod i use is the legened tourney bass ( slop and frog ) ..... and the reel i use is daiwa zillion ..... this combo is lite ..... im able to set the hook on those quick takes ....... IMO you be hard press to find a better combo .... ;D

The Dobyns 735 teamed with a Chronarch would be SWEET! That's basically the same setup I use except that I felt the need for a 7:1 reel. (My fish are fast coming out of the slop, lol!)

I have a custom on that same blank and paired it with a 50MG, and swapped spools with a deep spool. (since I use XT)  I could not be more pleased, with any blank or reel.

hey fletch .... i believe i saw a pic of that stick ..... it was sweet split cork and all ......

now i just found out the entire line of st croix legened toureny bass rods are split cork ....  this makes me think i need one more slopin frog rod .... id like to have a frog rod rigged with the cane toad and liter braid .... you have made me ask questions that should not be asked lol  ;D

I use a Loomis BCR875GLX.  It's a workhorse but is pretty light.

I team it up with my upgraded Daiwa Sol.  Very nice, strong like bull combo.

p.s. I still miss some hooksets...... :-/

I like the Loomis MBR 844C and a high speed daiwa Zillion for frogs.  The MBR844C has plenty of backbone and can be used for multiple applications.  The Zillion will pull the line in quickly, has plenty of power and is light compared to the Calcutta I use to use.

Thanks you for the input everyone,

I ordered a Dobyns Champion Extreme 704C (7' Heavy) and a Team Daiwa Zillion.  This should be light enough to cast all day and pull the hogs out of the slop quickly. By the way this will be my first Dobyns rod, I was leaning towards the G Loomis frog rod, but I wanted to try something different.  Also, the Zillion won out over the Shimano due to speed factor and that I already have too many Shimanos.

Tight Lines!

Nice.  Where did you get the idea for this combo? :)

Great choice.  You'll love it.

that sounds like a nice rig .... i mainly fish the st croix rods however i do have a okuma rod ..... ive been lookin to replace the okuma rod with a dobyans 795 ml ,,, swimbait rod .... let us know how the rod preforms ....  ;D

I didn't care much for the GD DX 704 and I think the tip is way to stiff to cast frogs and it is way too heavy, I sold mine.

Back to a Rogue 706, lighter and easier.

Too heavy as in weight, or rod power?

Called *** today to check status of my order and guess what?  My Dobyns rod is on backorder   >:).  Me being impatient asked what they recommended.  Sales guy explained to me that Lamiglass rods actually makes the Dobyns rods and they are HEAVY, as in weight.

HMMM  I thought, so I asked what he suggested and he said "Cumaraaaaaa", ahhhh a Shimano Cumara a stealthy looking beauty.  Long story short I asked him to compare that rod to a G. Loomis frog rod so he went out and came back with the verdict . The Cumara was 2 oz. lighter, SOLD!

So now I have a different frog rod combo :-?.  The Zillion will be go on my 6'6" MF St. Croix Avid and my Shimano Metanium will take on Frog Duty.  I'll see how it plays out cause it gets here Christmas Eve and I am going fishing the 26th.  By the way anyone here own a 7'2" MH Fast action Cumara?
